Have been looking around for replacement hard drive for C6 2007 hdi 2.2 hitachi hard drive but with no luck as it seems the hard drive model is discontinued.Has anybody tried replacing their hard drive with another model and if so what model did you use. Thanks. |

This has been discussed over on the forums at the Eurovan2 site: - Click Here -. I'm afraid I haven't followed it closely, so don't know what conclusions have been reached. As far as I know, the drives used in the RT4 are special types that are rated for automotive use. A solid state drive (SSD) might be an interesting option for replacement, given that they should be immune to shocks and vibration. Steve. |

Hi all I think we must keep "our own" technical threads on this site, therefore I'll translate and repost a thread I shared on my Swedish site; This is the partion analyse of the "Hitachi HEJ423030F9AT00 Endurastar J4K30" drive of the RT4 (standard 2.5" ATA-5).  Please note that the K: L: N: O: mapping are only temporarily made when I connected the disk directly to my PC for which I use an ordinary USB2IDE cable interface, allows you to connect any standard disk through your USB. The O-disk is the one for music (the jukebox). Spec of the disk on this now a bit aged 30 GB-disk are Latency average (ms) 7.19 Media transfer rate (Mbits/sec, max) 361 Interface transfer rate (MB/sec, max) 100 Ultra DMA mode-5, 16.6 PIO mode-4 Seek time (read, typical) (avg. ms) 13 Maximum (typical, ms) 24 Minimum (typical, ms) 3 Before continuing I took a safety copy and performed a thorough defragmentation of all 4 volumes. I'm now looking for an "Hitachi HEJ421010G9AT00 Endurastar J4K100" på 100 GB; Latency average (ms) 7.04 Media transfer rate (Mbits/sec, max) 554 Interface transfer rate (MB/sec, max) 100 Ultra DMA mode-5, 16.6 PIO mode-4 otherwise the same. SSD would be possible, there are some IDE SSD's still around. However, without the more or less necessary TRIM-functionality (a part of MS/Win7 and higher) the SSD will over time deteriorate. The navi would be razor fast when it comes to loading data though... Get the RT4 out by removing the two Torx 10  Cut the small stickers (YES you void the warranty), remove the top lid, carefully lift up the CD-mechanism (it is not fastened with any screws). The flat cable connection bus (compare with any ordinary IDE-bus cable in your PC dating 5-10 years back) is long enough to simply stand the CD-unit behind the RT4. The hard drive   Connector  According to a chap on Digital Chaos, the RT4 disk is formatted like this: (it's supposed to format 30 GB by it self (!), someone in the same thread have tried replacing the disk with an adapter connecting a 32GB SD-card) Re: RT4 Hard DiskFailure If you have exctly the same size HDD (30 GB) then you just put it in and system will take care of partitioning. If you put in bigger HDD, then you have to partition it yourself on PC. Partition sizes and formats are as follows: APPLI Type - FAT (FAT16) Size - 2.101.572.608=2004MB Active partition This partition holds the Application Software and the TTS (Text-To-Speech) Databases NAV Type - FAT32 (LBA) Size - 12.001.810.432=11445MB or 114446MB This partition holds the maps Database USER_DATA Type - FAT (FAT16) Size - 1.200.179.200=1144MB or 1145MB This partition holds the user data such as: - General device configuration - PhoneBook - User POI's It also stores Logging data JBX Type - FAT32 (LBA) Size - any14.702.213.120=14021MB or 14026MB This partition holds the Jukebox Files (MP3 Audio and Playlists) So, this is what I'm planning to do; Get hold of a brand new 80GB "Hitachi Endurastar J4K100 HEJ421080G9AT00", still on sale. Partition according to the above and ending up with little over 60GB jukebox space. Why the Endurastar? Why not "any other 250GB IDE/2.5" disk? Well, if you read the tech spec of the Endurastar and care just a little more than average for quality over time and temperature, this is why; They operate in ambient temperature -30°C to +85°. They operate in high altitude range of up to >5500 meters (odd, huh, pressure my friends pressure...) They are designed for automotive GPS-systems (vibrations/shock etc) |

Personally, I would be looking to swap the RT3 for an RT4/RT5 rather than going down the route of trying to improve the RT3, but good luck and let us know if you do succeed |

RT3? Hmm, lots of confusion. On top of my head unit the sticker clearly states that I have the RT3. But it has a built in fan, a harddrive from which it runs the navi. It has no Bluetooth. What is it? The sticker (forgott to take a snapshot) also contained a production date sometime before the cars production date (ORGA 11298). Might I have som sort of updated RT3? |

A working solution (HDD replacement): mSata SSD:  mSata to PATA 44 adapter:  I think the MP3 partition can't be bigger than 32Gb. Anyway the system keeps saying there are 10Gb of MP3 capacity. It's an RT4 (TR3eV-N3-Q2) It has been working perfectly the last 5 months, much better than the original. |

RT 5 ?(2010): For many years the (Hitachi 30GB) HDD failed 2-3 times a year in altitudes over 1000 meters. Reinstalling system fixed the problem without data loss. Operating system 8.31 did some repair of bad sectors.Finally it died in 2018. Bought cheap new one Toshiba 30GB MK3018GAP 5400RPM IDE PATA 2.5" (HDD2165) on ebay. So cheap i bought 2..... My garage installed and then everything OK again. | ||

I heard that the software assumes the drive is 30GB and, accodingly, the partition sizes are hard-coded. Compact flash is pin compatible with IDE so the adaptor contains no electronics. But make sure to get a branded CF from a reliable source because there are a lot of fakes on eBay. The original Hitachi drive is rated Ultra-ATA/100 which in theory can do 100MB/sec so a CF 600x (about 87MB/s) should be good enough (I'm using a 32BG Duracel 600x card).  |
