Well, I've had my C6 back for some weeks now and, although driving really well, she's already testing my patience with ridiculous faults! First, the DPF message came up and now stays up - appears to be the front EGR stuck. Now, I'm getting beeped at about the "ASR/ABS Handbrake faulty and Parking Sensors" although this comes and goes and may be because I need a new battery. The latest pain is the front indicator which sometimes fails causing rapid blinking. It's fairly easy to get out but I absolutely hate plastic retaining clips on anything, particularly aged brittle plastic. I managed to get the light cluster out with no drama but the bulb holder suffered the loss of 2 clips. Then, looking at the bulb, it's not just a simple case of taking out the old and replacing with the new - of course it isn't, why make it easy?! It seems the long legs of the bulb are soldered at the other side - is that right? These legs have broken at the bulb end and I tried pulling the legs out but they seem stuck fast, that's why I assumed they're soldered at the other end. But the bulb doesn't seem to come out as a whole unit with its holder, even though there seems to be clips either side of it, or am I missing something? Having read through a couple of posts, it seems that the whole unit needs replaced - surely not? I see that Chevronics have had these parts remade but it's £96! Just to fix a faulty bulb! If anyone has any workarounds for this, or even a spare unit they no longer need, please let me know. Having spent over a year with a very fixable old-school Mercedes, it's a stark return to the world of the C6 where nothing, it seems, is simple! |

Just to fix a faulty bulb! You have to make sure it's a warm day before splitting the unit as the plastic is brittle and lugs prone to snap but I recall taking one apart some years back and replacing a bulb, how and what with though, I can't remember but this post might help - Click Here - |

SOLVED: Thanks to MGMike who invited me through to his workshop to see how the bulb is actually removed. The bulb holder does come out, but it needs some encouragement using a flat blade screwdriver or similar. Fortunately, he also had a replacement bulb and holder, which is now fitted and working. As you can see in the pic of the original bulb, there is corrosion on the contacts at the bottom, but these extend up the side of the bulb and make contact with corresponding legs in the holder. With the replacement, I used a thin file to clean these and the bulb is working perfectly. I think this may have been all it needed originally before I simply went ahead and yanked on the glass bulb! Apparently, there are complete replacements available online, but they contain LED bulbs, and I'm really not keen on these things. I also managed to break two of the plastic clips that holds it to the reflector part. In the future, I would gently warm this, using a hot air gun at the right distance, before trying to pull apart. Fortunately, the two remaining clips are diagonally opposite, so I used some black silicone sealant when refitting, and it seems to be working well so far. I've never been one to read the instructions first, but the lesson is now learned! ![]() |

SOLVED! I fitted another wiper motor bought from MGMIke and the wipers are now working again. Unusually for a C6, this job was extremely easy! Also, they didn't need to be programmed, I simply ran the wipers through a couple of cycles before fitting the arm back on, just to make sure. The trickiest bit of the whole operation was dealing with those damned plastic clips. One of them broke when I just touched it, and it makes me concerned about the longevity of these cars, or any car with lots of plastic. Now to get on with the other niggles I'm having, but that will be a separate post. |
