Speedfix, Just to add, one of our cars burst the tank on a normal drive pattern. The other burst on its NCT (MOT) where it would have been revved to maximum for the smoke test. As it's a relatively inexpensive item, I consider it like a timing belt, something to change at a definite interval. Best regards, Phil C. |

Hello good Citroen folks, I have been a C6 owner for a week and the thermostat housing has already split. I bought the car in Germany, drove it home to Norway and this happens (barely a mile from my house). Have anyone tried strengthening the weak point on the thermostat housing? Could a dash of chemical metal do the trick so this wont happen again? |

At what interval would you recommend a preventive change and is it only the themostat housing or more parts ? Any difference for the 3,0 Hdi ?

Hi Jens, just replace the housing with a new one and perhaps plan on replacing it again in "x" years. To work out "x", suggest a poll is in order for all owners who have suffered a thermostat housing failure and the age of the car (from year of manufacturing to year of failure). Suggest this excludes the 2.2 4 cylinder cars. So my car was assembled in 2007, failure happened in 2015. regards G NB, possibly a "hog ring" clamp made from spring steel could be used to clamp together the two halves of the housing, so that the glue does not suffer a peel failure. The problem is that the two housing flanges would need some "reverse draft" otherwise the clamp would loosen over time due to creep in the plastics. G |

So far, that's one failure 8 years after date of car assembly (not 1st registered) and one failure after 7 years. Keep in coming, thanks G

Hi Balki, could you add the age of the cars (when manufactured, when failed). I suspect there is a better correlation with age rather than miles. Mine failed at about 95k kilometers for example. Many thanks and keep them coming. regards G |

pshawfocus wrote ... 2007 car, 67k, 2017, tonight! Very sorry to hear that, it is unfortunately a big weakness in the cooling circuit with the cars in general and need to be replaced if your garage is uncertain of its general age and condition. It's hard to really tell if it is good or bad especially the outlet tank on the lower front section of the engine. Mine lasted to over 100,000 but the plastic was like hard puttey and then failed. Very hard to visually inspect that without removing alternator and aircon pump units out of the way. The forums general advice here and my own experience as well unfortunately a few other forum contributors is to change out at around 60,000mls on to be certain all is fine and give real piece of mind. The plastic housing of the inlet and outlet housing seem to fail after that type of solid mileage. The tanks are a real issue on the car and the coolant pipes really all should be replaced at the same time after 100,000mls, (e3steve calls it the C6 menopause) or they start to create issues and frustration. Best change the tanks and you can relax after that. It really comes down to looking after that cooling system in general well, but the car is bullet proof in so many other ways if maintained correctly. Same with all other cars to be honest. Dave |

The long pipe under the left side wheel arch is the most vulnerable and if an any doubt should be changed. |

The long pipe under the left side wheel arch is the most vulnerable and if an any doubt should be changed. That's good Dave, your sorted for another 100,000miles at least on the circuit, but I think I will change my inlet and outlet tanks at the 60000ml mark just for piece of mind as I've suffered failure of one of the tanks. To be fair when I inspected the two tanks the one that failed was probably original and at 108000 and the other tank was changed by one of the previous owners after I would say a failure. Both are now new and currently arriving at 35000 mls service, but I will inspect both at the 60000ml mark and then decide to leave or change them out. I'd rather change them at inspection and pay the small cost for new tanks, as it's to dangerous suffering failures. But that's just me and I'm going to be a long term owner anyway. Or should say I would like to be! But really love the Car. |

Is it age or distance (=heat ?) that kills the plastic? Both are available quite cheap on ebay. I have now (130 000km, 7 years) changed one (in the alterantor area) and have both as new spares.

this is making me worried. As far as I know in the cars 10 year, 111k history no cooling related items have been changed apart from water pump as part of cambelt service at 100K earlier this year. I will go through the car's history paperwork again to be sure. |
