I have just experienced the same problem with my C6. a big clunk and then the warning message Gearbox faulty/malfunction.
I intend to get Frontlines to check it out and change the oil

BUT Can I still drive it until they can book me in !!
Any thoughts on this?

I've been driving my car with the gearbox issue for the past 50,000 miles. I was so annoyed with Citroen's attitude to fixing it under warranty I was going to get rid of the car as soon as I found something I liked more.

That hasn't happened yet, so I have had some quotes to have the work done. One garage has looked at the car and quoted £3.1k for a total rebuild, and another garage has said £900 all in for the valve block, or £1800 for the rebuild.

I am not sure changing the oil will help if you've already got a "Gearbox Faulty" message.

Oil changes are 'cheap' in comparison to gearbox rebuilds so what have you got to lose?

Thanks for the replies however I need a revisit to this problem. I had the fluid changed and all was perfect until this Christmas. I am now getting high revs on changing gear when up to temperature and sometimes a clunky engagement on pulling away from stop. but only in town. Motorway driving is still great. I was considering a second fluid change in the new year anyway as car has done 70,000 now. Any advice on whether this is sensible using my local man again, or should I go for a gearbox specialist for diagnosis in case the control box is damaged. If I do need a specialist can any one recommend one in Sheffield area.
Many Thanks in anticipation

If you only had a partial oil change, I would take another or arrange for a full clean/flush change before doing something expensive....

Not sure about the oil change will ask my garage and if necessary get a full flush etc before doing anything expensive.

I have a similar problem too. Mines is in a local Alfa specialist over new year to have gearbox flush and new oil and if there is one a filter?
It shares a gearbox with the Alfa 166 by all accounts so this trusted Alfa specialist should know what he's doing.
I'll report back if it's a fix.

Hi Paul, re the Aisin box in your car:-

1/ There is no service filter
2/ Different box* to Alfa 166 (Alfa 166 introduced several years before the box)
3/ Make sure your Alfa specialist knows how to set the fluid level - box must be hot and the fluid has to drip over the internal standpipe)

Regards

* Early 166s Autos are ZF, Facelift? are Aisin 5 speed.

Ok 3 oil changes later..... its still a bit [%*^#@!].....
I'm gutted, I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and have a new valve body put in.

Mine gets the jerks on the odd occasion, but not enough to get me to take it to BL Autos yet.

It also 'flares' on upshifts from 2 to 3 and, sometimes, 3 to 4, although this is infrequent; perhaps once every two or three months.

Hi just a reminder, changing the box fluid is mainly a preventative measure NOT a remedial solution.

Regarding harsh shifts and flares, these can be addressed in some cases by restoring the solenoid clearances, see previous posts.

I had a strange auto happening in my C6 2.7hdi auto!
It has been driving as smooth as silk (I don't boot it anyway!) when in a car park I drove it around quite fast & aggressively for a short while...Then...It wanted to snatch at 2nd gear and seemed in the lower gears to be "Lumpy"!
After driving it home & being parked up for a few minuets it was back to being as smooth as silk again!
No booting it this time !!
Is this a precursor to further trouble??
I Haven't had the car for very long it is not a daily driver.

Do you have any reliable evidence that the transmission fluid has been changed? Have you done this yourself?
