You’ll need to wipe it clean, once sprayed, at least. Or get an aerosol of compressed air — they also come with an insertable straw.

The fix lasted a drive of 20 km ha ha. Funny it doesn't seem to come up midway through a run, it's always either faults showing within 10 m of rolling or no fault.

Since the fix, I had so far:
x1 20 km faults free run
x1 30 km initial faults display then no faults after immediate restart
x1 15 km initial faults display then no faults after immediate restart

it took only 30 minutes (would be less now I know what to do) but can't be bothered to pull the tyre every time (although maybe I don't even have to pull the tyre off if I had a longer straw...)

more update.
it was fine going home yesterday but this morning it really threw all its toys out the cot.
- handbrake cable fault (no handbrake)
- heavy steering
- speedo stuck at 11kph at all times
- ABS fault
- ESP/ASR fault
- anti pollution fault
- airbag/pretentioner fault
- brake system fault
- constant humming noise even with key out and car locked
etc etc
still driveable but pain not being able to apply handbrake as I need to park on a steep hill.
brake is rubbish without ABS.

or is it perhaps all coincidence (minus ABS sensor fault) and the real culprit is an old battery on its way out...?

Very possibly!
It does sound like a BSI problem caused by low voltage but that doesn't explain the heavy steering or humming when all locked up.... unless that was the fans running and the auxiliary drive belt has snapped/come loose?

YR56 threw up a similar set of errors during its MOT which I put it down to the test centre running the car at tick over for an extended period with the headlights on when the battery was already "run down". Lexia reset and car in regular use without problem since. Well, until last week when the steering went heavy and temp gauge went up
Turns out I'd lost the auxiliary belt tensioner but that's another story for the saving of YR56 thread tomorrow...

Re: humming noise - maybe that was not an accurate description, it is more like very faint buzzing sound, like when some sort of electromagnetic device is going...
I think whatever the noise is, it was definitely caused by the ABS sensor error, so we'll see how many faults will disappear once that's replaced.

more update - the battery gone flat overnight, so that buzzing noise was some sort of power drain, presumably caused by ABS sensor(s).
i don't know if the pump was trying to maintain a set height while doing imaginary 11 km/h while stationary...

update - with both rear sensors replaced and the battery fully charged, all other faults have gone away and I'm back on the road.

Can I ask if you did the job yourself or did a garage do it for you? If the latter, what did they charge? Mine is displaying the same fault for the last few days so I need to get it fixed but I'm not as active and flexible as I once was.

The garage charged 2½ hour labour all up for both sides, which I thought was ok, given all the other dramas to confuse the matter (I did tell him to confirm the affected sensor location(s), replace and worry about the other issues afterwards). With just ABS sensor change, it would have been slightly less I guess.

If I can get my Lexia to load, I'm on attempt #4 at the moment, and identify which sensor it is, I'll probably get the garage to replace it.

I think most garages run diagnostics post repair anyway to confirm successful rectification of the issue so if the garage has been trustworthy, I would just get them to do it.
That said, it's nice to read the fault codes yourself - I'm hoping to get my Diagbox going this weekend myself.

Success at last. It's definitely the R/H Rear sensor. Now to negotiate with my local Indy garage.
