Hi everyone, it looks like mine is due to be replaced - 4 yrs old on a 2.7 diesel - the question is what is the best one these days ? I know there's been a step change in technology over the last 5 years for betteries, can anyone advise me what to go for that will give me some pretty heavy duty use ? Thanks in advance...

The main issue will be physical dimensions for the replacement as I don't think there is much room in the battery compartment for anything larger, but I haven't tried

I have always found the Bosch Silver batteries very good. Costco stock them at a slightly more reasonable price than others. However as Dave has said, foremost requirement is a battery that will fit. keep us posted.

'bit surprised by this - four years doesn't seem much, in thirty five years of running two or three at once, we've only had to buy one battery for a Citroën, and we've run them 'til they drop - ten to fifteen years (bar one we wrote-off, and one we'd run-up the miles on quite quickly & then had an offer of an almost-new one we couldn't refuse) ... our CX GTi turbo Series two was a devil to start, every time it needed care & usually a bit of time, but the battery still lasted fifteen years (90AHr Bosch we put into it soon after we got the car, because the original had been swapped-out just before we got it & what had been put there was clearly not up to the job -we were third owner, though when we got it it was only a few months old & had done just a few thousand miles) ...

Fifteen years must be some sort of record.

I changed my Ducati's battery this year at ten years old and my mechanic was shaking his head in disbelief it had made it that far. I've often changed car batteries within three years and with the extra heavy demand the C6 puts on batteries a three year life wouldn't be at all unusual.

...the CX GTi Turbos need a good battery with a high cranking power. If a battery on a CX GTI T2 is low...it will not start. Sorry for the O/T!

Yep, when we got it, the battery it had was about a third the size of the one we put in, which then lasted fifteen years (maybe more, now, if it's still about, which it certainly was five years after we passed it on) ...

anyway, whatever - our starting problems with the CX were all to do with connectors - it sometimes took five minutes to get it going, but it only once didn't start ! And we kept it a long time because we liked it so much - v.nice to drive, windy roads or straight - in Germany, we tried it flat-out a few times, too, when there wasn't too much traffic about, once from Munich to the border (going to Salzburg), and once going to Rottenburg (new autobahn, going north before Stuttgart) - very well behaved, hunkered-down nicely, and 13mpg for best-part of an hour each time, with a close watch on those temperature gauges it had atop the middle of the dash', and a careful bit of easing-off ahead of our junction !

It was v.good at back-roads, too - our favourite being over the tops from Penrith to Bamburgh. Pretty reliable, too - in the time we had it, apart from normal consumables, the only replacements needed were a bit of fuel pipe (corroded, leaked onto the exhaust) and a bit of hydraulic pipe (power-assist, rubbing on steering-column, so wore a hole).

We're pretty sure they started with the CX when they set out to design & engineer the C6, 'cos it's even better !

Bhockenhull, you never elaborated on the symptoms suggesting a replacement battery is needed?

after we passed it it on, it was carefully restored & new 'plates were put on it, not sure what they were apart from the first two letters being CX ... the ones we had on it are sitting in the garage at the moment, waiting to be hung on the wall, when current building activities are done ...

Back on topic - what's the proper way to charge the C6's battery? Trickle charger via the terminals under the bonnet? Or direct onto the battery in the boot?

Richard, it won't make any difference which terminals are used for trickle charging as the currents involved are relatively low and the underbonnet connections are connected to the battery with thick cables capable of handling starter motor current levels. Electrically they are both the same point in the circuit.
I think the under bonnet connections are more convenient to access as well.

That's what I'd hoped, but wanted to be sure before hooking it up. The car's had so little use over winter!

Hi - well, I fitted a new battery which was fine, then about 6 months later started to get a screeching sound from the belt - the car was in the garage for ages, they replaced about every pulley concerned to no avail, so they took it to a specialist and it turned out the alterntaor need replacing - which is probably why the battery started to drain earlier on !!!! What a job - cars fine now though

Hi my three year old car has a 4 year old battery so I will probably replace next year as a matter of course.

Looking at the alternator belt drive, sure looks busy down there so I can imagine it was a big job changing it out.
