Hi all, I’ve got a slight leak from the thermostat housing on my 2006 2.7 V6. I’m mindful this will eventually fail completely and empty all the coolant. My question - How easy is it to replace, a DIY job?

I’ve replaced hoses and thermostats on other cars but if this is a nightmare I’ll leave it to the experts! Thanks

Easy is relative with the C6 2.7 HDI and I don't know your "screwdriver quality".
In my opinion, it is one of the simpler jobs - after the replacement, it must be filled and bled.
You can find the instructions for this here in the forum under Technical documents

C6 Coolant Circuit Drain, Refill and Bleeding Guide: - Click Here - and C6 Coolant Outlet Housing Removal Guide: - Click Here -

Instead of the original refill device, a 1 - 2 litre plastic bottle can also be used.

Greetings Wolfgang

Hello Lofty,

As per cit-rotti's comments. It is relatively straightforward with a bit of patience. Removing the support bracket for the boost pipe from the intercooler to the butterfly box that sits over the housing is a bit fiddly. Removing the triangular bracket on the adjacent engine mounting makes it easier.

Don't delay in changing it though. If it bursts suddenly while driving you may not be aware of it. Owners have lost engines as a result of it. You should also look at Vaho's tutorial to refit the low coolant alarm system. I fitted it and it saved me when the inlet cooling tank failed.

Best regards,

Phil C.

Hello,
I need the part number for a replacement THERMOSTAT HOUSING . I haven't been able to find it . (and also correct thermostat : is there a choice of thermostats?)
I also need simpler directions on how to remove and replace the thermostat housing.
The Technical document on the outlet housing (is outlet housing referring to thermostat housing?) is difficult for me to understand.
Cruiserphil : would you elaborate on what you wrote above in this thread?
How do I avoid making a mess and getting coolant all over the place?
What other parts am I possibly going to need as it takes several weeks for me to get anything sent to me in USA .
Thanks!

1336Z4; 9657182080 is the part number for thermostat housing that I found on Ebay .
Part is not OEM , but made by TOPRAN .

COOLANT THERMOSTAT
Opening Temperature [°C] 83 °C
Supplementary Article/Supplementary Info with seal
Supplementary Article/Info 2 with sensor

Apparently this includes 83 degree thermostat and a sensor.
What does this sensor do?

I found this one on Amazon:

THERMOSTAT HOUSING 1338E7 Fits Citroen C6 2008-2015 Jaguar XF 1336.Y3
Brand: Aotop

$45.00

Does the thermostat go inside the water hose ? How is it secured in place?

A follow up, regarding correct THERMOSTAT temperature:

It appears that the thermostat is secured inside the
THERMOSTAT HOUSING / OUTPUT TANK BY 3 SCREWS .

This part is available from many sources : how would I determine which one is the best quality ? ($15 from Ali Express; $45 from Amazon)

WHAT is the correct thermostat TEMPERATURE to use for my HOT climate?

Citroën along with other manufacturers sourced parts worldwide so where the best parts come from is anyone's guess, but there is a list of parts suppliers at the cars 'launch' available - Click Here -

As for a thermostat, the C6 went to the Far East and Australia, which are as hot as California with the standard thermostat. Even the South of France can get to 40c+

I must admit to having used speed sensors direct from China, used one that is still going strong and used the other yesterday, works well these are for the front fitment £2-71 each free shipping!.

For the rear when one failed and had to drop the tank I went for the Bosch type 0 986 594 521 £25-00 + carriage back in 2013, still working well.
