A few weeks ago, I had error messages appear saying 'ABS and ESP faulty' followed by 'Handbrake Fault’.

Switching off the engine and restarting cured it for a while but then it recurred.

I took it to my local specialist who checked and cleared the fault codes – no faults detected.

Last night, it happened again.

Julian, what you describe surely relates to a intermittent connector fault for one of the rear ABS cables, the connector over the tank.

If the specialist had looked in the fault log, it would have been there.

Well, I looked over his shoulder - he wasn't using Lexia but an app on a laptop. As far as I can remember, it listed the faults but when he went in and looked at the fault log (I assume that is what it was), it said 'no fault detected'.
There was one fault that could not be cleared - rear suspension rest pressure or something like that.
So, is it a tank out job?

I managed to fix this error a few times just by cleaning the ABS sensor since debris there can also trigger this error. Once there, check is the the debris is not built up because of grease leaking from the wheel bearing!

That's what the specialist thought it might be - he cited flooded roads as being a possible cause.

I've had this intermittant fault for a few years now, it usually self clears but sometimes raising the suspension brings on the fault and sometimes raising the suspension makes it go away (so the connector theory makes sense).

I have tried cleaning the face of the ABS sensor a couple of times and it made no differences whatsoever.

Just this weekend, I hooked up Lexia and cleared residual faults in the BSI. The ABS and secondary fault codes had self cleared so were not present in the individual ECUs (even though I had beeping ABS, ESP and Handbrake warnings all week) but sure enough the historical log indicated the faults with the timestamps. I then cleared the fault log.

It is entirely a different procedure to clear the log versus clearing a fault code!!!!!!

One thing to be aware of is that the fault log can easily get an overflow if there is a persistent fault!

So my advice would be to get a proper Lexia or latest session and forget about the misleading App.

G

Note, if it the App was saying "no fault detected" then almost by definition this is NOT the fault log because the fault log shows the historical faults with the time stamps.

The saga continues - took the car to a friend who works on Peugeots and who has Lexia but Lexia refused to talk to my car - communication failure - so my friend used another piece of kit which was able to access the log:

Front LH wheel speed sensor signal fault. Short circuit to positive or short circuit to earth or open circuit
- Permanent fault - unable to clear.

Absence of communication with the ESP ECU incorrect value received
- Permanent fault - unable to clear.

This may well be a red herring, but I've had this message several times - ALWAYS just after I have moved the drivers seat back a fair way. A rummage with the wires under the seat seems to sort it.

The seat hasn't been moved at all...

Julian, you refer to the "log" but I suspect you mean a live fault code which is a different thing.

The Handbrake error does not ring true for a front ABS fault so it might be worth persevering with a Lexia session.

I had a Lexia problem myself where Lexia would recognise the car but could not interrogate the BSI. It turned out the connector into the diagnostic port was not sitting straight and not all the pins were making a proper contact.

Sorted - replaced n/s/f braking loom - the old one was very corroded and the insulation was worn through - cleared all the codes and all is hunky dory - including the parking brake...
Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

They are a bit exposed to the elements so it may pay to check the other side as well Julian

Would it be worth putting some of that plastic cable protector on do you think to reduce/stop the rubbing?

Did a visual inspection of the other side and cleaned the connectors. The cable protector is a good idea - but getting to the loom is not easy - you have to remove the wheel arch liners.
