No amount of tinkering with the sat-nav, since buying the car in November, could get a voice from it. It wasn't unduly worrying, however, as the screen and HUD are more than adequate.

Driving back from Oxford on Monday, I finally decided to get the ever-so expensive sat-nav upgrade disc loaded. This was uneventful, apart from the momentary shock of seeing that I was travelling at 140 before realising that the system had defaulted from MPH to KPH during the upgrade procedure.

I punched in a destination early this afternoon, and my world was rocked when the car started speaking to me. I'm not sure about the slightly Welsh accent, but what a pleasant surprise to have another feature of the car revealed so unexpectedly.

The stilted and sepulchral male voice on my old C5's sat-nav was known in the family as Herbert Lom.
