I'm stunned; you have my sympathy, for what use that is.

It's a bit late, I know, but it's always a good idea in frosty/snowy conditions to press the top of the window down, once you've opened the door, to ensure it has dropped as far as necessary to prevent that happening!

This weather is driving me mad, the driver's window on my C5 Tourer sticks fully up when it's frosty and I have to get out of the car to swipe my car park access card.

Pete.

For us with winter C6 that have not had this experience yet:
-Was the problem that the window had not been fully lowered by the usual 1-2cm ?
-Or hade som fault made the window go up again ?
-Could it have been avoided by pushing it down with hand power before closing the door ? (if the problem had been discovered)

So far , mine has survived ice and snow and (today) even been abused for driving wood for the fireplace home

Sorry for your bad luck Colin.

The worst car I remember was the XM where even if the handle were not frozen solid, you couldn't physically open any door. And this was only at -1 or -2.

Regards,

As others have said, it sounds like the window didn't drop when you opened the door.

It will open OK if it doesn't drop, but will not close without potential damage as you appear to have found out I'm afraid.

I went out and looked at my farside window (my C6 is LHD) after opening the door. His window did drop properly. Otherwise its top edge would not be well below the rubber. Wonder how and why this happened!

The price you pay for trendy frameless glazing.

I must say it was nearly a deal breaker for me when I did my first test drive in a C6. When I saw the window dropping as we got into the car I just imagined it would give lots of expensive trouble.

@verycleverman, it's all very well making that point but it's insane for the manufacturer to expect the owner to check the window has lowered sufficiently before closing the door, madness. And what of passengers? Do you ask your passengers to verify their windows are down the required amount before they shut their doors?

@colinj, I hope you get it fixed without too much cost.

My sympathies Colinj, I'm a member of the 'broken window club' too. Exactly the same happened to my car on a recent frosty morning.
I'm annoyed with myself, as I was aware the glass was frozen to the rubber door seal when I opened it, but didn't realise the glass had not dropped down.

The retail price of the window is £229 inc VAT, plus fitting. I've yet to check if my insurance will cover this. As I have other cars to drive the C6 will have to wait in turn for attention.

My Citroen Specialist has offered to fit a new window, as he was shown this on the Citroen training course he attended when the C6 was launched.

Tks for all your comments, as for the glass breaking i open the door without any problems it was when i was closing the door it cracked, i got out and had a closer inspection after a few chosen words.the glass when down but only by a few mm upon closing the door slowly i could see that the glass was touching the metal strip because it was, nt low enough.

but of course i didnt see that as i was, nt looking when closing the door, looks like the cold weather stop it from dropping the 1-2cm needed.( THAT WON, T HAPPEN AGAIN )new one fitted by autoglass £75.00 excess on ins.

Luckily I have been spraying my windows with de-icer before attempting to open them on frosty mornings so have had no issue so far.......

Deepest sympathies with ColinJ. I had a narrow escape of this kind in similar circumstances last year with my car when a rear door opened OK but made a horrible dull thwack when I closed it as the window did not drop. In this case the glass withstood the impact - I was lucky.

My previous 2 cars were previous gen Subaru Legacys which also had frameless doors, but the seals were designed so that the window did not have to drop to open. It's this design feature which seems to be the issue.

I recall some long term tests of other cars with this feature where similar incidents have happened (Merc CLS, BMW 6 series, etc.). None of which helps ColinJ - for whom I hope the replacement goes well at least.

COLINJ ouch, quite sickening.

One to watch out for, and of course the cold makes the rubber stiffer, so every things working against you.

De-icer around the windows good one Dave, I had a trawl around and the favorite product seems to be silicon gease or

Gummi-Pflege (water based) This one got a lot of good reviews

Gummi-Pflege details here - Click Here -

Gummi-Pflege cheapest I could find was Amazon so ordered some - Click Here -

VW have their own lube here's a link to there forum about it quite detailed. - Click Here - It's says don't use it on the flocked parts. Does look like silicon grease.

Let you know what I think when I get the Gummi-Pflege.

BTW I looked at my seals and found the drivers side tucked in??????

just a thought ...

we cracked our passenger / left / near-side front window when we closed it onto a stick that was poking out of a bag sat on the front seat ...

can still remember the dull cracking sound it made !

it was replaced (by Autoglass) FoC, and all seemed fine (apart from the time involved) ...

but, sometime later (a year or two), we had the door lock / opening mechanism fail - most likely (ISTM) due to glass slivers intruding ...

I have had a nasty experience of a broken passenger’s window, but unlike those previously reported, this happened in mild conditions. I had opened the passenger door, not very wide, just to deposit a bag of shopping into the footwell.

When I closed the door it sort of bounced back a little. I thought perhaps the seat belt was catching in it, but when that proved wrong I tried again. This time I quickly realized that the window had remained fully up and was hitting the door frame.

Alas a crack had already been initiated at the front corner adjacent to the mirror. I couldn’t lower the window by the control button so I had to drive carefully the mile home with the door slightly open on its safety latch, and the crack quickly spreading in star shape.

My Citroen dealer cannot inspect it until Monday next and the receptionist mentioned it could be a job for Autoglass. It is obviously not simply a job for Autoglass as something horrible has happened to the window/door interlock system.
Can anyone suggest a cause?

My dealer is about 12 miles away. Is there any danger that the system will go into limp home mode, or worse, after a few miles if the ‘door open’ warning is not cancelled?

Regards
