Hi, I have had my C6 for a little over a year, and have enjoyed every moment until it needed to have the gearbox stripped and rebuilt in December. A couple of days ago, I took it to a local 'tyre' garage for 3 new tyres and an MOT, when I returned, at first they said that the water pump had blown during the test, then it transpires that in fact a pipe had split and it has blown a head gasket. Prior to going to the garage, I had no warning lights, she drove perfectly, there were no leaks on the driveway.... What are the chances that the garage is responsible for this ? Also, can anyone recommend a garage in Oxfordshire to sort the engine out ?

Part of the MOT involves running the engine at high revs as part of the emission testing process, so yes it could be that they have caused the issue

I'd recommend taking it to independent Citroen specialist B.L.Autos in Welwyn garden City, Hertfordshire, not that far from Oxford really. It's run by Barry Lowdell (B.L.) and his son Robert.

Robert has owned several C6s and has just rear placed the cylinder heads on a car that had overheated, so he's had some practice. He's also replaced an engine in another C6 that had seized and rebuilt a Jag S type engine with the same 2.7HDi V6.

They’ve worked on all my cars for 15 years and have many loyal customers, many with C6. They are well known in Citroen Car Club circles too.

They have a local chap with a car transporter who could collect your car, as it's probably best not to drive it, unless your breakdown cover would transport a car this far.

I would be getting it transported to the Citroen specialist to get an independent opinion on it and thanking action from there. They had the same thing here in NI hand had to drop it eventually as they had so many claims.

Donzo, most garages make you sign a legal disclaimer as part of the MOT test. For that reason I wait and watch.

I did not sign a disclaimer, nor was I asked about one. Piecing together what I can with my limited knowledge of these things, it would appear that during the emissions test, someone was really thrashing the engine, which caused a hose to snap, coolant came out, but they didn't notice, kept ragging it, then cooked the head....

Spoke with the guys at B.L.Autos, they seem to know their stuff, so getting it shipped down on Thursday - Keep your fingers crossed for me !!

When it is done, will then attempt to seek redress from F1AutoCentres (Interestingly, while speaking to another garage, they let slip that the garage around the corner from F1AutoCentres has a very healthy business repairing cars that 'go wrong' at F1, including a FaceBook friend who suffered a broken fuel pump there......

I will keep you updated!

This happened to me a month ago. Car was fine, no leaks before the MOT then 10 mins into the MOT while they had the bonnet open and fiddling around in an area I thought they shouldn't be anywhere near, they stopped the MOT to tell me a pipe had split and the car wasn't holding any water and was undrivable.

They even tried to show me where the damage was but i couldn't see it. They said I couldn't drive the car and had to leave it there for repair.

I told them straight away I found it very suspicious and I wasn't happy leaving the car there.

They said i couldn't drive it and said i can do what i like with it so i drove it 5 mins down the road to ATS who pretty much confirmed it was malicious.

There was nothing wrong with the pipe. There seemed to be a nice hole in the thermostat housing....screwdriver sized.

£400 to repair.

My local Dealer charges £30.00 for an MOT, understands Citroens (well modern ones, no chance on the Traction) knows to remove the LDS cap on the C6 before raising the car and letting the wheels hang, so why go anywhere else?

Dave in my ignorance what is the LDS cap please? It's just that I know when I take my C6 to the MOT Centre that we have in NI.

It's the tank with the black cap for the suspension fluid, front left, looking in the engine bay

Jumping in here, Jack: it's the LDS resevoir screw-on cap. The reservoir is beneath the bonnet, r/h/s, aft of the o/s headlamp.

On the C5 it's more or less in the same spot but under a screwed/pop-clipped plastic cover.

Got her back today - in the end, I had her transported to B.L.Autos who I must say have done sterling work.

They very quickly diagnosed that it was not a water pump or a head gasket, but a blown thermostat, so they very swiftly and efficiently got it sorted out, and dealt with a suspension issue at the same time. The total bill was very reasonable (made even more so from the thought that I would be paying a couple of grand)

I think I shall be using them again in future, the hour drive each way is more then made up for by the expertise and experience that this garage demonstrated.

That's great news but how can 2 garages say it's a blown head gasket when it obviously wasn't?

It's getting harder to find someone you can trust these days.
