Can the bad alternator take out the timing belt?

Not sure what exactly you mean but a seized alternator would cause auxiliary drive belt problems.

Hi Dave,
thanks for the quick reply. Well the french car specialist mechanic told me not to turn on the engine til the alternator is fixed. Otherwise, he said it will snap the timing belt and damage the engine.
He said that to me back in late december, which I has not turn on the engine til this day. I just got back to Australia last week and I've order the replacement alternator from the UK. It has just arrived yesterday. I'm planning to replace the old alternator.
Just before I replace it, I wonder if the old alternator could/might have damage the timing belt (not auxiliary belt) before I change. Should I open up and check or not.

Cactus,

If the auxiliary belt is intact I can't see what influence it has on the timing belt. I did see a suggestion that if your auxiliary belt derailed and got jammed between the crankshaft pulley and the timing belt cover it could cause the cover to rub against the timing belt?

On the alternator do you think it's failure is down to a failure of the clutch pulley?

Regards,

Phil C.

Not sure if this is helpful but my Six has a failing alternator clutch pulley at the moment. As a result, there was quite a bit a fan belt squeal going on. Dealer has managed to lubricate and temporarily stop the noise while waiting for new clutch pulley.

Apparently the part has been re-engineered to resolve a weakness in the design and I'm assured that there is no threat that the alternator will seize or precipitate any damage to other parts. The wait however has now exceeded four months.

I'm told several other Sixs in Sydney are waiting for the same part.

Yes it is the pulley problem. I took out the old alternator. The pulley bend to one side. Hence the noise it generate. It still rotating ok. But for how long I do not know. So I replaced the damn thing. It only cost me 300 pound for the alt and 20 for the new belt.

It take me less than 1hour to do the job. And the damn mechanic here want to charge me 2k for it. So thanks to their greed, now I know how to change aux belt and alt.

I recommend you to fix the alternator pulley or buy new one from uk asap. Sent it to your door brand new for 350 pound incl postage. The current exchange rate favour aussie. It only take a week to get here. You should change it yourself too. Really easy job.

My engine lose power and rev high rpm without change in speed. It has gone crazy. And the particulate filter clog warning message come on. I hope it's not timing belt issue that cause engine sudden lost of power.
