I just had this message come up on the screen today. 1st time i have ever seen this, even on my previous C6. When the message comes up, some of my electrics don't work (like heater fan, parking sensors). Could it be the alternator?

Check the alternator/alternator clutch. Search this site, several problems around 100 000km. The things not working is one of the the good sides of the electronic system: shuts off the less important things to preserve energy to get you home or to the garage (economy mode)

That's a new one

As Tjensen says, could be the alternator, but also check all the earth straps are good and secure.

Had the same message, caused by alternator clutch (but could be anything else too). Bosch (producer of the alternator) is now using another technology because the clutches were unreliable.

Well, they called me again yesterday to say the only alternator they could get would be £750 fitted! I point blank refused so then realised there was a C6 being broken on eBay for spares and low and behold, he had the alternator there. £160 delivered, so I have done that and having it delivered to the garage.

The laughable part of this is that the garage called me after I told them i was going to buy this one from eBay and said "we have removed the alternator now, there is a place down the road that can recondition it for £50!". Information that would have been useful earlier!

So I think I'll have the 2nd hand one fitted, keep my old faulty one and have it reconditioned and keep it for when the 2nd hand one eventually goes.

Rich,

You're answer to Tjensen's question will be interesting (no pressure!). When the clutch failed on my alternator (c. 90000 km I think), opening up the alternator was very encouraging. It was like brand new! Bearings were perfect and you could not discern wear on the brushes or commutator. It looked like it would be around for a long time!

So make sure before you spend money reconditioning your spare.

Best regards,

Phil C.

and of course, it would have really helped me that the eBay seller would have delivered to the garage as I requested instead of my home address where I am not staying! Unbelievable...

She should be ready by 4:30 to collect. They say its all back on and working. They had to re-gas the aircon which added £40 to the job but that was unavoidable. So, all in all, £350 all in which is a lot better then the £750 original quote. I still have my old alternator as well which for £50, is worth getting reconditioned.

So Rich,

We all want to know. Was it alternator or clutch pulley?

Regards,

Phil C.
