 In Canada/USA we use a site called car-parts.com to search thousands of automotive wrecking yards across the continent.

Is there anything like this for the U.K. or Europe?

 If you look online there seem to be various sites in the UK offering the service you describe. Main problem here, I think, is that the days of the old fashioned breaker's yard with gems hidden away are long gone. Environmental and safety regulations have made most yards much more ordered places, while operating costs push them to get fast returns.

Sadly, I suspect that if something like a C6 appears, with the exception of perhaps pulling the powertrain, it will be straight in the crusher as an old French car for which they never get asked for parts.

Personally, I have found Ebay the best source of used items; sometimes from private and sometimes from business sellers. Good photos obviously help if there is doubt over an item or part number.
