 Came to the magic moment this afternoon -------- first cranking over after belts and oil pump job. Almost immediate start; about five seconds tappet rattle then on all six and quiet as you could wish for.

Plenty of reassembly to do still but nice to know we seem to be on the right track. Biggest relief of all is that the new oil pump has obviously picked up oil OK and no obvious leaks.
