Which is the right oil for 2.7HDi |

Hope you can help... Which is the correct oil for the 2.7HDi? According to the maintenance and warranty guide it states DIESEL HDi FAP 1.4 L HDi - 1.6 L - 2.0 L - V6 = Synthetic Antipolution 5w 30 Total Activa / Total Quartz Next line down it says Other (diesel) engines and there is a wide choice of suitable Total oils such as Quartz 7000 10w-40, 9000 5w-40, 0w-30 is my car a 2.7HDi FAP? the garage put in TOTAL Quartz 5w 40 9000 Confused ! |

Yes TOTAL confusing ! Look for C2 in the certification list, or even better PSA B71 2290 explicit stated. It is the FAP filter that makes the oil selection more tricky, and yes you have one. The 3,0 Hdi has en even shorter list of approved oils. Cheapest one with the right specification probably COMMA PRO-TECH 5W30 ASEA C2, /PSA B71 2290 A right version of TOTAL is QUARTZ INEO ECS 5W30 (Quartz 9000 Energy 5W30 is wrong) But Total have many and confusing names Castrol Magnatec Professional C2 5W-30 is right, and for 2,7 also EDGE PRO 0-30) Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5-30 is a C2 (and there is a lot of info and knowledge in the site...) etc |

thanks for your help, i did look through the site but wow did it get deep. It looks like they should have used 5w 30 not 5w 40. Oh dear. perhaps thats why i have had 2 EGR valves! |

Very good reply from Tjensen. ACEA C2 is essential to get the low/medium SAPS, correct viscosity and reasonable tolerance for soot levels. ACEA C2 2008 sequence upped the specifications requirements for wear so check you are not buying an oil qualified to ACEA C2 2005/2007. I personally switched a year ago to Millers ACEA C2 XF after previously using Total Ineo ECS. Millers Oil use a higher quality base stock in my own personal opinion. As well as using the right oil, increase the frequency of changes if doing a lot of short trips. Regards G |

ACEA C2 is essential to get the low/medium SAPS, correct viscosity and reasonable tolerance for soot levels. Too much soot and..... the EGR valve blocks, which answers your question. Me, I have the oil changed annually irrespective of what the service guide says as oil and a filter are far cheaper than an EGR valve, or worse. |

I think we both (neal2175ds and me) have wrong oils. My dealer filled the wrong one (as well as too much) when delivering the car and my trusted local garagae is saying that its no drama, just get the right one next time. I plan to change before 10000km, but EGR-anxiety may move me to do it earlier (now, its 2000km). Any advice ? | ||

Tjensen, oil and filters are cheaper than engine repairs of paying mechanics to clean/replace EGR valves. Also cheaper than doctor's bills (worry over wrong oil?) Regards G NB, sorry to upset folk, but Ford specify ACEA C1 for same engine in many of their applications. Same performance requirements but very low SAPs. Would it work for the Citroen C6? |

I have started having oil changes at 10,000 miles. I just wish i had something official to go back to my dealer with to say they put the wrong oil in. The maintenance guide is so unclear. Its annoying as I get on well with my dealer too, in fact they are excellent but on the oil front from what i am reading here they have used the wrong oil. Incidentally i rang Citroen UK customer service for their opinion and got told to check with my dealer... .Catch 22 ! |

Hi, my experience with the dealers is that they just use generic 10W-40 unless the owner supplies his own or demands a particular oil. I don't wish to argue with my dealer and they are happy to use the oil I supply. Accusing the dealer of using the "wrong oil" may not be that productive. Regards G |

But surely if what they put in is not what seems to be specified in the Maintenance book supplied with the car they are clearly in the wrong, and as experts should know better? Thats why i want to check i am right in saying they should have put in Synthetic Antipolution 5w 30 Total Quartz Ineo ECS. |

Instruction book in the car and the document on lubricants (2010) in the file collection of this site is clear and spesfic on ACEA C2/PSA B71 2290 and your 10-40 oil is probably not. Just tell them, say your nervous and want to pay for a new oil change in this nice and special engine, Would it be adviceable to change filter as well after only 2-3000km ? The C1 is even cleaner, the C2 is more balanced with friction reducers and the (coming ?) C4 will be both ? |

Today I changed to the right oil (Comma ASEA C2, PSA certified) for my 3,0 Hdi. Did not care to change the filter since it had only been used for 2000km with a wrong kind of 5-30 TOTAL oil. Next time after 10 000 km or 15 000 km (not the 30 000 advertised...) and then I will have a new filter as well | ||

Hi guys while I was in Roy Tolleys today to have the tyre pressure sensors deactivated and wheel diameter set to 17" I asked "what oil is used for my car?" We look up the chassis number for the car and that will give us a "range of suitable oils usually 3-4" I have a service contract? "for menu and service contract, we use one recomended from the range of suitable oils, so it will be in the specs for the car based on chassis number" OK so that will be the cheapest, I suppose I could specifiy and pay the difference? "Yes, the best would be the INEO, but the lower grades are still specified to chassis number" OK so if I have my oil changed and it was wrong? "We would look into it, and change FOC if wrong" So if anyone has any doubt, when booking in for Service contract or Menu Priced servicing, makes sense to ask :-
I would have just change oils and not thought about it, but now I think I'll pay the extra and have the INEO. |
