I have now been trying to solve a problem on my 2.2 since I first bought this car a few years ago, and so far, everything I have tried, has failed to stop this issue from occurring.

The Issue - On Long journeys of 70-100+ miles, or over an hour of driving, and seemingly randomly, whilst at sustained speed (50-70 Mph), the head unit will reset suddenly, whilst using Jukebox/radio/Aux, and/or with Navigation. In all cases, there is a loud, staccato bang sound from all the speakers, followed by a system beep, as the whole head unit goes through a reset, with the resultant head-unit performance slow to recover full function. It does not affect driving controls, or the running of the car, but due to the nature, causes a shock, as it comes like a bolt out of the blue.

Once this has occurred, it will continue to reset during the driving phase of that journey. Recently I drove 200 miles with no problems, then on the return 200 mile journey, it did it at 70 Mph after around 2 hours of driving, then again around an hour after, though in the past, this has occurred several times in one journey of lesser mileage, and time spent driving.

This originally occurred on the built-in factory HD of the RT3EV Unit, so I replaced that with an SSD, then replaced the RT3EV unit, with my dead 2.7's identical unit, then replaced the 3 10-year batteries with brand new ones, reformatted the SSD and used the firmware disk to setup new partitions, and reload all the maps, all to no avail.

I also changed the car battery, from a standard 12V battery, to a Lithium Ion Phosphate Battery from Groves in Cheltenham, which has a resting voltage of 13.3 Volts, but he same issue has continued, no matter what I have tried.

The only other thing I can think of is perhaps an over-volt/amperage issue, perhaps when the battery is fully charged whilst driving, or an under-amperage issue, in the power supply to the Head unit.

I would add, that it doesn't seem to do it when no music or navigation is occurring, however, I haven't driven long distance without either, so it is hard to say if it is directly related to playing music, or using navigation, however, I suspect that there is some data corruption happening, when this occurs, as some of my music tracks have sections missing, though that could be down to the original tracks being copied.

Even though I have an SSD (128GB), and generally it is a little quicker than the original HD, I do get verbal navigation slow downs, where the verbal directions come after I have made a turn, or entered an indicated road. I am unsure if this is related, or if it, along with the other issue, is a sign that the head unit's chippery is failing, though I also note that it occurs also when the head unit is cold from the aircon, and hot from the aircon, so don't think it is heat-related failure.

Whatever it is, the unit always seems to recover after the resets, which suggests it is not the head unit's chips, but may be something being triggered as a self-protection feature, i.e an over-volt/amperage issue.

If anyone else has experienced this reset whilst driving, I would be interested to know if you found a fix for this, or for any advice on what may be causing this, as it has occurred on two separate RT3EV units.

I had reset incidents for the whole car (2010 3.8 Hdi) lifespan (In my use 14 years so far). Usually once a month or so. Not a problem. But some resets, especially when driving in high altitude (above 1000m) also required re-installation. This has not happened after I got a new HDD but resets will still happen, but not often.
