Hi there all, I was fitting a bluetooth unit to my C6 2.2 manual, and was looking for a 12V feed and earthing point with my multimeter in the fusebox area (I was plumbing in a 12V USB adapter to 'host' the bluetooth unit), found a suitable 12V feed, then probed for somewhere I could earth a cable to. What I thought was the fuse box, has turned out to be my BSI, and in the centre of this there is a circular metal disc behind a black plastic swirl, I touched my negative probe to this and got an earth, but as I was part out of the car in wind, the wind caught the door, pushing me, and my probe tip (very sharp) pierced the metal disc, and my wipers went into their change position, and I lost most of the electrics and there was that horrible electrical burning smell. Even my lexia system cannot connect, and to my horror, I realised that I had just killed it. My question is - can I use the BSI from my broken-engined 2.7 V6, and re-program it for the 2.2? I have the original security card codes for both cars. Does anyone have a BSI to sell for the 2.2? Does anyone know of a service that can repair the C6 BSI? I have found a website that does PSA BSI, but doesn't list the C6. |

I have talked to Paul from Rolling Motion Auto Electrical Ltd, in Caerphilly, Wales, and have ascertained that the metal disc, is in fact the top of a capacitor, so am sending it along with the engine ECU, Keys, and Security codes to be repaired and reprogrammed. Apparently, using the 2.7 BSI could cause issues as it has more electrical items, like moving rear spoiler, and variable damping, and in addition, would end up doubling the mileage by adding the previous mileage to this one, approx 300,000 miles. A replacement BSI needs to have the same part numbers. As the damage is only the capacitor, hopefully no other system has been affected, but it will still cost around £270 to replace the capacitor and do all the reprogramming - but may cost more if other parts were damaged by the shorting out of the capacitor. |

Hopefully that's all that is wrong, a blown capacitor. Pity it happened and IIRC we haven't had a post on it before, so sounds like you have been really unlucky for it to happen. |

I feel unlucky to be fair, but also like a right proper muppet, I would have recognised it as the top of a capacitor if it wasn't for the black plastic swirl on top, which obscured the classic cross on top of the capacitor. I will post the results of the repair here, so that should anyone else mistake this bit for a bit of underlying chassis, or feel the need to poke at it with a multi-meter, they will be suitably warned, that whilst this is the internal L/H fuse-box, it is also the BSI unit (Body Systems Integration), and should be probed carefully with blunt, not pin sharp probes as in my case. I would normally replace this 10p capacitor myself, however, on the back of the circuit board where the two legs poke through, one leg is very close to a micro IC chip, and the other into a very narrow bit of circuit, so as the risk of further damage is not insignificant, I will pay for an expert, hpefully with a proper micro-soldering station, to do it at a much more expensive price. The upside - well I'm hoping there is an upside to this - is that this service includes a diagnostic, which should highlight other areas of weakness, as it is now an old, well used BSI, and if other sections need some tlc, this should result in a rejuvenated BSI - I have been getting a complete reset on long journeys in the past (where my screen then also momentarily displays a small blue Peugeot soft-top) - which I replaced my HDD, then converted to SSD, then replaced the batteries in the Head Unit, all to no avail, and so I was suspecting the BSI. Perhaps this may cure that problem too. |
