Hi Everyone,

Has anyone had any experience with polishing the headlamps on a C6 either yourselves or professionally?

I’m collecting my new car next weekend and it’s the only cosmetic thing which I’d like to address.

Yes, I did mine and the result was good, I think.

I have a fair amount of car body repair stuff and used a rotary polisher with car paint cutting compound to achieve the final transparent gloss. Not everyone has access to that sort of equipment but it's possible to get a pretty good finish using one of the readily available commercial kits made by the likes of Meguiars or 3M. If you have a battery or electric drill, buy a kit that comes with a rotary pad. It makes the job a lot easier, quicker and with better results.

I wet-sanded my headlights first with 800 grit wet&dry abrasive and worked through 1000, 1200, 1500 and finally 2000 grit. After that they were worked over with the rotary polisher with medium then fine cutting compound.

Just a heads up. If you've never done this before then the headlights will look alarmingly cloudy after the very first round of wet-sanding! They'll look much better once you've done a bit of buffing with the rotary polisher. Well worth masking off any adjoining bodywork before you start too.

Thanks Reaper,

I doubt I’ll try and tackle it myself as I have no experience of this at all and would be worried about doing more damage than good!

Do you have any tips on what I should look for with a professional?

Most car body shops could do this sort of job but might not be interested as it's quite minor work.

I'd try one of the innumerable car 'detailers' that seem to be everywhere nowadays. I wouldn't be paying for more than a total of circa 1.5 to 2 hours work either. I would think they should be able to give you a fixed price.
