I have some strange goings-on with my electronics and warning lights. It started some weeks ago with the parking assistance which would randomly stop working. Following this, I started getting the ABS/ESP/ASR warning lights and the handbrake stopped working - the electronic handbrake is the most ridiculous invention ever in the history of the motor car, IMHO! A scan was carried out which said that the ABS sensor on the NSF wheel was duff, so I ordered a new one.

Whilst waiting for this, I found on the forum a reset procedure for these warning lights, posted by ChrisW on 23rd December 2024. Immediately following this procedure, I was still getting the warning lights for a short time but soon after they stopped showing and now they are remaining off and the handbrake is working. Now I’m left wondering whether I should fit the new ABS sensor or leave things well alone?

What puzzles me is this, if the ABS sensor really has failed, why have the warning lights gone off? Surely a failed sensor is a failed sensor? My feeling is that there is a dodgy connection somewhere that needs some scooshing with contact cleaner.

I’ve already done this with the connections in the front driver’s side wing, mainly to try and revive the parking assistance, but I’m not sure where else to look now so any ideas gratefully received.

My advice is to leave well alone until the error messages come back. The sensor cable, once connected to the harness under the air filter, runs back to the ABS pump module but getting to that to clean it is a bit of a challenge.

If your parking sensors are still playing up, try cleaning the connections on the ECU in the spare wheel well. With all the water that's been in there it can't hurt.

Plus make sure there are drain holes in there...

UPDATE: Well the strangeness continues. I cleaned the connections to the boxes in the boot which didn't change anything but after washing the car yesterday the parking assistance has come back on!

Obviously there's something going on, perhaps water-related but I'll keep an eye on it. At least that's another thing off the list of things to do, now my driver's side rear door isn't locking but that's for another thread - Click Here -
