I have been trying figure out how to get access to the 10mm bolts that secure the heat exchanger air duct that blocks access to the ancillary / auxiliary drive belt which MUST be removed in order to remove serpentine belt: if I can possibly do that, then I must de-tension the tensioner pulley with a long 19mm wrench or socket but I can't get a tool in there: there is NO room . Then I must insert a small dowel into a hole to hold the tension off the belt tensioner spring. I cannot see the hole , let alone access it. ( due to its hidden location behind the C6's metal frame ) I have read the download BIBG78PO... REMOVING, REFITTING ANCILLARY DRIVE BELT multiple times : This download fails to state HOW to remove heat exchanger air duct, nor does it say anything about how to actually get to the tensioner (which looks all fine and dandy in the picture drawings) Has some kind soul on this site actually changed the ancillary / auxiliary serpentine belt themselves and can they give me some plain and simple instructions about how to do it . This "end" of the 2.7L HDI motor is so inaccessible : if the engine was out of the C6 , it would be so easy ! |

Hello Citroenroen1, For the 10mm bolts, remove the triangular bracket from engine to body in front of the duct at the air inlet box. This can be removed without supporting anything. This gives your hands more room to access the bolts. I use a 1/4" drive 10mm socket with ratchet and extension bar to remove. Just be careful of the rubber seal in the neck of the pipe which fits onto the butterfly box particularly when refitting. It is very easy to pinch the seal. When refitting the 10mm bolts I use a spot of grease on the socket to hold the bolts as it's difficult to enter them by hand. The locking hole is at the bottom of the tensioner and is not visible until you pull the tensioner forward with the 19mm socket. You can only get to the locking hole from under the car with the intake pipe removed. I use a 1/2" drive 19mm socket with breaker bar and lock the bar with a piece of timber jammed between it and the engine or body to allow me to insert the locking pin. I use a piece of coat hanger wire as the pin. Once that is inserted you can remove the socket and the pin holds the tensioner against its spring. Do not remove the pin until you reinstall the tensioner with belt fitted, Then pull forward the tensioner and lock the breaker bar again to remove the pin. Then slowly release the breaker bar socket to reapply the tensioner. Best regards, Phil C. |

Thank you Cruiserphil for your informative reply and your hands on experience . I am "in the dark" about a couple of things : In regards to the heat exchanger air duct 10mm bolt removal, I cannot see " the triangular bracket from engine to body in front of the duct at the air inlet box" : isn't the air inlet box on the other side (left side) of the C6 ? I cannot see what you are suggesting (I just can't yet see it) : what is this triangular bracket made of ? metal or plastic ? what kind of fasteners hold it in place? Do I access it from inside the right side wheel arch or from under the C6 ? MUST the serpentine belt tensioner be completely removed from the motor in order to replace the serpentine belt ? In what place must I position myself in order to be able to see the locking hole (when I de-tension the belt tensioner ) ? (it seems that the locking hole will only be visible with an inspection mirror from the underside? ) Just to confirm my observations : in order to remove both the heat exchanger air duct and the serpentine belt tensioner, first the right front wheel must be removed and then the plastic inner fender (splash shield) with the 3 lane departure sensors attached to it as well as the rear inner fender (Splash sheild) must also be removed? and then the triangular bracket you mentioned : IS there anything else to remove to make the belt replacement easier ? (The first time doing this job will be the most difficult: like my front suspension units replacement ... and once done , the next time is much easier! ) |

Hello Citroenroen1, Have a look at the post - Click Here - Member Cisco posts photos of the tensioner removed with locking arrangement. Removing the inner wheel arch liner makes access and visibility easier. You do have to remove the tensioner to replace the belt. I will forward a photo of the bracket shortly. Our car is out and about at the moment. Best regards, Phil C. |

Thank you Phil for your assistance and the link to Cisco's post : his picture is very helpful (a picture says a thousand words!) A picture of the elusive triangular bracket will also be most helpful: what fasteners are used to attach the triangular bracket to the C6? |
