Hi!

I am changing caliper and brake hose on the front of my 2.7. The new brake hose is approx. 2 cm longer than the old, from the holder fixing it over the drive shaft to the caliper. As a result of this, the hose is bent more than it should, and worse, it rubs against the metal on right turns. There is no chance to set the holder or attach the hose to the caliper at other angles - both are fixed.

I thought this discrepancy in length between hoses was a result of a production fault, but now I got hold of 2 more hoses, and they are all 2 cm longer than the original. This is potentially dangerous, so if you have changed hoses, I would take a look at the earliest opportunity to check that it does not rub against anything at any steering angle. The problem is not easy to spot, and might have been overlooked also by garages!

If it is impossible to source a new hose that fits, I will probably have to either go to someone that can shorten the hose, or try to reposition the holder over the drive shaft by bending it. I am, however, worried that that will weaken the holder (and that it might snag on something if it is repositioned, but that I will of course check).

Anyone had any experiences with this sort of problem?

Best,
Frode

Hello Frode,

I renewed brake hoses on both a 2.7HDi and 3.0HDi and the hose lengths were correct. I distinctly remember checking the lengths against the ones I removed to make sure they were correct.

Kind regards,

Phil C.

Thank you for your answer! I think Phil's approach is the right way to go if in any sort of doubt.

I have now sourced brake hoses that actually fit. From the five brake hoses I have had my hands on, my tentative conclusions are as follows:

1. When ordering brake hoses for your car, you may end up with a hose that is stated to fit both the C5 X7, C6 and some Peugeots, like I did. These may not have a shield for the ABS sensor and can be too long for early C6, at least. It may be that they fit newer C6, like the 3.0HDI, I have not checked. The problem is that it will be possible to fit them to earlier cars, but they will probably wear through very quickly.

2. Using the correct part number (which I do not have here now) instead of the car's registration number in my search, I only got parts that have the shield for the ABS sensor. Interestingly, the ones I now found, do not fit C5 X7, only C6 and some Peugeots. I ordered two hoses, and they are both are of correct length.

The problem with the brake hoses is then not as severe as I first suspected, but this may still happen to others. Not noticing the problem is a distinct possibility. The issue with the shield for the ABS sensor, I simply solved by cutting off a piece of the old brake hose and mounting it on the new. Luckily I paused when I saw the bend on the brake hose, otherwise I would probably have had an uncomfortable event looming in the not-to-distant future. A friend of mine on this forum tried out how a failed brake hose on a C6 feels, and he was not impressed by the remaining braking power...

Safe braking.

Frode
