The orange rubber seal at the top of my 2007 2.7 HDi C6 is crumbled to bits. Do I need to replace the entire strut, or can just that rubber part be replaced?

Replacement strut I’m afraid. Not cheap if you can find one.

Done a bit of online research and found this on Aussie Frogs;

..... you should be able to take the orange rubber part from a C5 strut, even a scrap leaky one, then fit it to the C6 strut. Don't mix the snap ring retainers though as they may be different depending on the age of your C6.

If your front struts are not leaking and you are replacing only because of the orange rubber part, put them aside or sell on rather than tossing them out when the job is done

Also applies to a used but 'leaking' C6 strut. If the orange seal is OK it appears you could swap one over.

There are C5 struts on eBay for a lot less than C6 ones, still not cheap but if it's only the seal you need.....

Thanks Dave. I knew there was a reason for keeping that last leaky strut I'll have to find time to see if I can get it off.

I kept all 4 that I accumulated in the hope that someday there would be a repair strategy!

Best regards,

It would be interesting if someone actually tried stripping one down to see if the leaking seals could be bought or remanufactured...

Dave,
I think the strip down has been done on YouTube but no one (that I know of) has been able to rebuild them.

Found a video of one stripped - Click Here - but the AMVAR Valve had been 'butchered' so no chance of that going back together. Looking at a picture of the actual 'leg' it's hard to see how you would access the 'orange' seal despite what Aussie Frogs claim.

"ORANGE RUBBER PART" is a cushion or mount ?... what is the correct name for this part?
If I were able to find a C5 strut, how would I take apart the strut to install the replacement orange rubber part ?

And what causes the rubber (foam?) to deteriorate so badly ?

The "orange" rubber part appears to NOW be a yellowish color : is this a newer and better design?
