Hi all, sadly yesterday my C6 was rear ended when I made the mistake of actually stopping at a STOP sign! Whilst the BMW driver behind me was perfectly pleasant and gave me his insurance details etc, it leaves me very nervous that the Insurance company will write my car off rather than fixing it. I'm guessing this rather than knowing this at this stage. However they wrote our C5 off after a minor prang five years ago.

Has anyone experienced similar damage before and does anyone know whether parts/panels maybe available out of the UK or France?

None of the lights are damaged. The rear wing was down but I ran her a little faster on the way home to check it was still working and it is now permanently up. The bumper and boot lid are crumpled.

The car is perfectly drivable but when you stop the car tries to lock and unlock itself although it won't now lock because it thinks the boot is open when actually it refuses to open! Very annoying.

Any feedback gratefully accepted.

Thanks Fraser

PS I have tried to upload an image but for the life of me cannot see how I attached an image to this post. I'm only a graphic designer who designs websites! Helpful hints? Ta F

Fraser,

I would suspect you're going to be right, the cost of a replacement rear bumper in the UK is about £2,500.

I had one written off a few years ago, Rear Bumper, Boot Lid, Floor Panel, Spare Wheel Well and the support bracket behind the bumper, going back about 7 or 8 years, I think it was something like £6,500.

My other thought might be to speak to a couple of independent dealers to see if they have any "spares" in stock, sometimes you see/hear about them being broken.

Sorry to hear about that but if I understand you correctly it was the BMW that drove into your car so the BMW owner is liable and shall indemnify you; i.e. no need to worry for your insurance.

Or are the rules different in your country?

Good luck!

Hi Mikkel,

Quite correct. What I am worried about is that with the cost of the repair the insurance company may prefer to write the car off which I don't want!

Fingers crossed...

Hi Mikkel,

The rules are the same, it doesn't matter which insurance company is liable, they all follow similar guidelines. My perfectly driveable C5 Estate was trailered away to the scrapyard a week ago after it had been rear ended at some traffic lights in France. The collision was on the 8th October and I finally got paid out last week. The damage was estimated at £3100 and the French insurers paid me £2600 and scrapped the car. I could have bought the car back and repaired it but I couldn't be bothered, besides which I took the opportunity to replace it with another C6. Oddly, though, when I bought the C5 I thought I had overpaid for it but the insurance payout was only £50 less than I paid a year earlier and I had covered around 20,000 miles in that time.

Pete.

Hi Pete,

I could handle losing our C5 Estate to the insurance company but not a perfectly good C6!

All going well I may have a slightly better C6 with a couple of minor previous scuffs on the bumper that I inherited when I bought her, repaired. Fingers crossed...

Say it ain't so, Fraser!!!
Sorry to hear that - tell you what, everything will be ex-France as far as any body parts go, it'll take a while (I should know - it took 3 months to get my minor prang sorted, running over a dog on the motorway)
I'm afraid it would be a write-off, if it involves dent on the bootlid etc as you say. Good news is there are a couple of C6 on the market that's been sitting around for a while, you can easily replace with it (ideally buy the wreck back for spares but I know you haven't got space for it)

As for image - you have to upload to a hosting site (like imgur, I'm using and copy-past the link), like so here:

Hi Sam,

I really don't want the car written off as I've recently done all the cam belt, auxiliary belt etc maintenance, she's still driving well and I like the colour, trim, sunroof speculation. I'm not a fan of the dark trim/leather.

Is that your XM? I used to own a 1989 high mileage XM 3.0l manual which looked the same. I repainted it roughly fifteen years ago so it should still look pretty good. It was a high mileage car that a friend brought in England for me. Everything in miles but the speedo returned to zero at 100,000 miles and when I bought it in 1996 ish, it had done 120,000 miles and I added at least another 60,000 miles to that I guess. I think I sold it to Phil Cotter in 2005?

Yep, it's mine now - 2L carb semi-poverty pack manual, ex-UK, rather gutless as you can imagine. It's done 290xxx miles so far. - I've been going on about it at club-xm website.

That's a great news - yes I know what you mean, you spend money on maintenance which you can't get back from insurance payout. I had that a couple of times but obviously C6 expense is another level up.
Keep us posted.

Pity you can't make it to the National rally with it.

Yes it is pity that I'll miss the rally Sam.

Out of interest I asked how much the fix was budgeted for and Evans European said approx $6,400 which is less than I expected as the boot lid and bumper need total replacement.

Hmmm that is a lot lower than I expected - does that include labour?

Hi Sam, I just asked what the cost of the fix was worth for the insurance company and she said approx $6400 which was a lot less than I thought it would be. The boot lid and rear bumper need replacing. I don't know whether they reuse the pop up wing etc. I would hope so.
