Frequently Asked Questions

Question
ECU

Answer
ECU (Electronic Control Unit).

An ECU is an electronic control unit (microprocessor) and is used to control various engine running functions e.g injection timing/multiple injection/idle speed/fuel pressure etc.

The ECU is informed what the engine is doing and what is required of it by sensors from various points sending back information to the control unit. e.g engine temperature/engine speed/road speed/throttle position/fuel pressure etc.

The ECU is making decisions constantly based on the information that it receives.

If one of the sensors is faulty and the ECU decides that the reading from that sensor can't be right then it runs the engine to a pre determined "limp home mode" until the sensor is fixed so as to avoid being a non runner for a simple sensor fault.
