Chris, presumably you have considered the repair option (Polish specialist)

our car has been off the road since 10th October, waiting for a replacement for our leaking near-side / left front suspension strut - we've been chasing it, and Citroën HQ have now said it's likely to be first or second week of January before we have it in our hand - apparently they're having a major review of their supplier approval process, and this is the reason for the extended delay ...

Thanks for the update Chris, I have driver side strut on order amongst other parts for the suspension, my new strut is delayed as well!

kind regards

not sure about the repair option - my feeling is ours has been leaking for a while, plus our experience has been good with Citroën parts ...

OTOH, we're pretty fed up - what can they be doing ? We were thinking to order a Cactus, to succeed our ageing Berlingo, but not sure we will, now ...

Hi Chris, I sympathise with your dilema:

PSA shock rethinking whether to reapprove the single source supplier of their struts, leaks caused by cactii, wornout Berlinski, polish polishers... whatever next.

our car has been up on the ramp, in our's garage, for two months now - they have several ramps, and have kept the strut near to hand, in case have to move it ... before the strut, they replaced the alternator belt etc .. they now call that part of their workshop their museum !

test-drove a Cactus on Friday, with most of the extras ... good, comfortable, tempted, even if it does have Macpherson struts !

I have been waiting for 8 weeks, still no sign. The old strut was damp, it is now wet. I have no choice but to drive as I need the car. My SL is in for a respray so have everything crossed !

BTW ... we did buy the Cactus - new to us, we've added about 500miles, and we're pretty pleased with it !

NB: the auto' wipers work well - we find the 'C6 ones much too active, and the poor coordination with the washers very frustrating - in contrast, the arrangement on the Cactus, looks to be near perfect ! It's reversing camera set-up is also pretty good - wish the 'C6 had these things !

It will be fine. Just depressurise and follow the instructions, don't rush it.

our strut did eventually arrive (early version, with the electronics, for damping variation) & was fitted ... but we've driven it only a few times since because, when we started-up to come home, on its first trip out, the crickets had returned en-masse, despite having replaced the drive belt at the same time, and they not having reappeared until then ...

after that, we left it in the (our) garage for several weeks, until we had time to take it to be fixed, today ...

immediately after start-up, crickets were plentiful & quite loud, plus there was an awful noise & SWMBO (later) said there were plenty of drips on the garage floor & drive ...

while driving, crickets seem to go when engine is pulling at least gently …

they also go after a while when the engine’s idling (when we had the car up on the ramp for inspection they were very prominent until, after several minutes, they suddenly went quiet) …

belt's new, no water leak, charging seem fine - so could be the tensioner, not sure … what else would not be there all the time ?

looking for the leak (drips occur only now & then, from somewhere towards the front on driver's side) - steering system seemed prime candidate (sounds awful on maximum lock, but fine until then) … couldn’t see the leak but, prodding around, the clip on a rubber hose (10-15mm thick) was fairly easy to rotate, and we had a drip from the join once, while fiddling …

we topped-up the suspension fluid (about 1.5 litres, quite a lot) and all now seems fine, bar the crickets …

loss of fluid maybe explains why car was pitching more than usual (nothing terrible) while driving it there (!)

re: crickets, the guy's advice is to run it until problems develops further, rather than replace this that & the other, just in-case …

Crickets are usually the alternator pulley - and not the drive belt or anything to do with the suspension. I wouldn't risk a failure?

5271 J0 would appear to be an updated model replacing 5271 L8

C6Dave,
It's an old posting, so you may have found out already that there is a misunderstanding above in how to read the spare part listings:

"RP" in Citroën spare part terms means "Remplacé par" = "Replaced by".
So when it says "5271J0 RP 5271L8", it means that 5271L8 is the updated part which has replaced 5271J0.

New AMVAR struts are extremely expensive whilst the non-AMVAR ones are quite a lot cheaper.

I was wondering if it was possible to combine a brand new non-AMVAR strut with old AMVAR system (which presumably still works nominally)? Doesn't it just "bolt on top"?

Also, has anywone tried restoring the struts? Both front struts started leaking and it doesn't pass MOT anymore...

There are a few companies that restore/repair the struts. Search in debates in this forum.
The usual small gasket leaks: try "Omega 914" in the LDS hydraulic oil, it might solve the problem.
The non-AMVAR version has a fixed shock absorber that eventually must be removed and changed for the electronc unit.
