I never seem to get rid of the new and new problems thet keep coming with my C6.

Two days ago, while driving, I noticed a strong coolant smell in the car. After I parked it and opened the bonnet, there was a large stain of coolant on the expansion tank, which had obviously overflown through the cap. Two days later I decided to top it up and there was about A LITER missing!

This has actually happened several times to me in the past 2 years, but it has never overflown that much. Basically, these overflows happen every 3-4 months on the average. Is this normal? What causes the coolant to overflow at times?

I have had no leaks since refilling (for now).

Could be the cap with its built-in valve which has a tendency not to work properly.
Cheap replacement btw...

I have changed the cap less than a year ago. I hope it's not again broken...

What puzzles me is why is this happening only occasionally and not every day? I drive the same route every day.

It might be possible that you have got larger bubbles of air in your system.

Did you do the whole procedure of bleeding the system?

Or have you used a modern venting system for coolants?

I had this problem many years ago with a Renault R4. Head gasket leaked high pressure gas into coolant system and pushed coolant out of the system when the engine was hot. It varied with engine temperature. Hope your problem is the cheap cap (NB: three different types of caps with small differences, probably not important)
