My 3.0 HDI hasn't yet had it's timing belt changed. Time wise, as the car is a 2012 it's not yet due but mileage wise, it's pretty much due so I want to get it changed for piece of mind.

I can't decide wether to tackle the job myself or send it into BL Auto's to be done.

Due to the distance involved (400 miles each way) to BL Auto's, I'm thinking that if I can do it myself it might be the easier option.

Has anybody done the belt on one of these? Anybody got any hints/tips/tricks on doing the job?

Thanks,

David.

Hello David,

I did the belt on the 2.7 and looking at the 3.0Hdi I can't see it being any different. Having done it I would say it's easier than timing belts I've done on Xantia and XM's. There's just quite an amount of dismantling to be done including dropping the coolant to remove pipes into the coolant tank for access to engine mounting bolts.

The belt tension is set by the tensioner so there's no sweating over trying to guess SEEM units. Having the Citroen instructions was a great help and the bit about slackening the camshaft pulleys sounds scary but makes sense when you do it. Another plus is that the crankshaft auxiliary belt pulley is fitted to the crankshaft like the pulley on the water pump - there's no need to go at the main crankshaft bolt.

I'm hoping to do the 3.0HDi next year.

Best regards,

Phil C

Watching this with interest as my 2.7 needs the timing belt done now too.

Pop around and you can have look at a dead engine on the floor to see how it's done.
I've done two now but both times the engine was out of the car. There's not a lot of room to do it with the engine in the car and you can expect a few scraped knuckles

David,
Unless you're a bit of a masochist I'd take it to BL Auto's rapid like...

I'm a little surprised you didn't have it done when the gearbox was out for repair. I'm guessing the engine/box unit was taken out as a lump?
I suppose the extra wonger would have influenced that decision

Thanks, I'd love to have a look to see just what's involved. Let me know when suits best.

Mike,

The entire car was taken to the gearbox specialist from BL to have the box rebuilt and they left the engine in situ when they did it.

If BL had taken the engine and gearbox out the car would have had the belt done whilst it was there. BL were busy when the car was delivered back from the gearbox specialist as well and I didn't really want it taking up space sitting in their workshop until they could do the belt.

If I'm making a trip down for work I'll get it booked into BL to be done, if I'm not, I'll probably do it myself. I've done a few V6 quad cam belts over the years and seeing as the tensioner on these is automatic it shouldn't be to bad.

The car is only 7 years old so time and mileage wise it's not quite due but it's not far off it so I'm not rushing to get it done.

The 407 has now done 1000 miles this week including a trip to and from Peterborough the last 100 miles of which is was given a good old Italian Tune Up. The gearbox seems to be behaving perfectly at the moment so as long as it lasts I won't be in a hurry to get the belt done when I do start it.

David,
You know my view, ultra cautious with maintenance. I wouldn't let a car of mine go over 100k miles on a cambelt.
Had my blue 3.0Hdi changed at 8 years and 40k miles, for peace of mind.
The grey 3.0hdi is being done anytime now, 29k miles and 9 years old, along with the 3 coolant housings.

Right, looks like I've got a job for the Christmas holidays

I've ordered the main timing belt kit and the fuel pump belt and tensioner as well. There is a feint vibration at idle that's a bit annoying as it's not there on the 407 so I've ordered the engine mount that sits on the chassis leg too.

I'll treat it to a new coolant bottle too as the one on it has gone quite yellow.

Hi David,
I did my C6 about 3-4yrs ago and it was my first timing belt work. 2-3days for me because I was reading and checking and reading etc. But I found it grand. And it's not bad at all if you take your time and remove the engine mount on that side etc. I followed a timing belt posting regarding a 2.7 X7 C5 on the Citroen car club website and I found it really helpful. I'll see if I can find the link for you. I think e3steve also posted and mentions that he didn't lock the crankshaft as it was stable enough to fit the belt to it.

With your expertise it would be no bother to you to be honest.

Thanks Dave,

That link is the same as what I've ordered, but on the 3.0 HDi the fuel pump belt has 80 teeth rather then the 85 teeth on the 2.7 so I ordered that separately.

I've been reading the instructions for the 2.7, it actually looks easier then the Xantia V6 and XM V6 belts I've done as the tensioning seems to be automatic on these when you pull the pin out.

That's very interesting David about the belt teeth number for the 3.0 fuel pump. Something i hadn't realised before.

Regarding the disassembly. Removing the belt covers off (3 parts) is infact the hardest part for me (some of the bolts are hard to reach) I invested in some lovely small ratchet spanners.
