Is it usual behaviour for the 2.7 HDI engine in the C6 to blow a bit of smoke when hard accelerating ? Cannot see it during the day but at night when i put my foot down and look in the rear view mirror i can see clouds of either dust or smoke through the car behinds headlights.

I thought the DPF's were suppose to stop this kind of thing? My 2.2 and 3.0 HDI C5's don't seem to do this.

Remember the exhaust points down so there'll be loads of dust blown about when you boot it

I have noticed the same thing. The 2.7L is an indirect injection diesel and 'only' Euro IV compliant, so under hard acceleration there is a short burst of smoke. It's not just dust. My Euro VI compliant Skoda Octavia does not do the same thing.

You should have seen what my 2.1 XM gave out with the pump slightly tweaked!

The 2.7 HDI is a direct injection common rail diesel. Black smoke out of the exhaust indicates a problem with the combustion air supply, resulting in a mixture that is far too rich. Possible causes: dirty or malfunctioning LMM's, dirty or clogged up air filter, or any of the temperature or pressure sensors or actuators in the air intake and compressed air circuit, including the swirl valve system. Best advice to check and clean these parts before your DPF gets fully clogged up.

Her service indicator is showing about 1000 miles until it will be due , its currently on 109,000 and it was last serviced at 90,000 so it could be a dirty/clogged air filter. Might all go away once i get it the service done in the next month.

Well i'm not driving the C6 now until Wednesday when i need to taker her to the garage for a look over.

Mate came to admire the C6 yesterday took him out for a spin, popped the bonnet when we got back so he could see the engine and smoke was coming from under the left hand side of the engine cover area. Not massive amounts just a steady small stream of light grey smoke , i'm guessing its leaking something and the smoke is from that hitting the hot engine. I had somewhere to be so was not inclined to remove the cover to inspect closer.

check the water level before you leave and if it's a long drive to the garage, stop often and check again.....

I did check the water 3 hours later and the water was only up to the very bottom of the header tank so topped it up . Does this sound like a common thing on the 2.7 like the thermostat housing breaking? Luckily my local Citroen specialist is only 2 miles from my house.

If it hasn't been changed already I would definitely recommend replacing the 'stat housing and the plastic inlet connection. Both are known weak spots at or around 8-9 years (70-100k miles).
If you are lucky, you've caught it before doing too much damage!

She is 9 years old and on 109,000 miles so looks like its time to get it done even if its not the cause of the current issue. No mention of that job in the detailed service history.

Garage have called, i will have a nice £1033 bill to start my C6 ownership with yey!

When they rev it water gushes out the engine which is the symptoms i read on here of thermostat housing failing but they called it something else. Also that coolant pipe that corrodes and Citroen charge a lovely almost £300 for is weeping so they are changing that.

I also have a hydraulic leak on a pipe to the rear centre sphere.

On the plus side at least the main failure on this model will be sorted. Just cannot believe the cost of that coolant pipe!

Thermostat housing incl thermostat itself (part 1336 y3) and the coolant pipe that rusts (6466WJ) seem to be about time. Plan for the other plastic parts in the coolant system, the inlet tank (1336y2)that fits well together with changing the timing belt, aux belt, water pump and generator clutch. Been there, paid that. The main coolant expanion tank is also a candidat (but mine is still OK)

I ordered some of the parts on ebay, at a fraction of the Norwegian Citroen prices (even higher than UK prices)

They did recommend i do the cam belt and water pump at same time but i said no when i saw the price will have to leave for a few months.

No harm. Cam belt, Aux belt, water pump, generator clutch and the "inlet tank" is in the same area and can be taken togeter. Listen for the noise of a problematic clutch and do it before the aux belt skips. (I missed it)
