Illuminated 'P' on parking brake control

 The (P) on the parking brake control illuminates in red very rarely and very randomly on my car. Can someone tell me what 'normal' behaviour should be? e.g. should it normally be lit whenever the parking brake is on?

 Yes, red lamp should illuminate when handbrake is applied.
