Has intermittent power steering fault. On start power steering is either working or not - more often not. Other errors occuring ABS / ESR. (Hope it got that right). The problem has been assessed by Citroen workshop and by auto-electronics expert. They can't find the cause and I may have to scrap the car which I don't want to do.

Leod,

Surely scrapping the car is a bit hasty? Considering 2.2's are sought after?

Can you describe the symptoms in more detail?

Best regards,

Phil C.

Leod,

Not trying to be smart, was your LDS level checked properly as a first item?

Best regards,

Phil C.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

The LDS fluid was changed around six months ago following a leak in the unit which was fixed. The problem began around 12 weeks ago.

I've had the car for around five years now and it has been well maintained mechanically over that time, new clutch, timing belts etc. etc. However, there is a problem here finding someone who knows their way around the electronics.

I have become used to error messages on the car but, in this instance, the Power Steering fails and may come on again following a restart. Also getting ESP/ASR errors, Handbrake Faulty - which are real and the handbrake can't be used as it locks and anti-pollution system faulty. The car has been sent to a local Citroen expert who've basically thrown their hat at it saying it needs specialist C6 Electronics expertise which is not available here.

Leod,

The ESP/ASR affecting handbrake release is familiar. This happened to me, which I traced to a fault in the brake pedal switch. It doesn't show as failed brake lights as it's a second pair of contacts that interface with the ESP/ASR system. My wife discovered that when the fault affected the handbrake preventing release, if you put the car in reverse, applied gentle power on the accelerator and then operated the handbrake switch the handbrake would release. The brake pedal switch solved the problem! - Click Here -

On the power steering front, I don't have any immediate answers, but I'll have a look at the hydraulic circuit. Was your power steering pump suspected at any stage?

Phil C.

Thanks Phil,

I've forwarded the information to the Citroen shop. Hopefully, they will look into it.

Anything on the Power Steering would be a great help.

Fairly rare but a friend had a power steering pump fail on a C4, swapped it for a used one and problem resolved.

Don't always assume it's an electrical fault as 'mechanical' failures would not be picked up by the BSI as computers aren't that clever....

On the 2.2 C6 the power steering is 'assisted' and may be down to a faulty valve and there are various part numbers listed for the 2.2 depending on build.

A few of the parts guides are available here: - Click Here - but a Vin would help to track the correct docs for your car

One other item to check is the battery.
If it's not fully charged all sorts of electrical gremlins can occur, like your ABS/ESP fault.
If it's more than a few years old and/or you predominantly drive short journeys
you should consider getting a new battery of the correct spec (95Ah from memory).

You might want to try Charles Hurst in Belfast as they have experience of the C6.

Yes it would be a bit of a trek for you but if your stuck anything is worth a try but as Shaun says check the battery.

I remembered last night that I had a similar issue with the power steering locking up on a C3 some years back (pre 2005). That was intermittent and as far as I can remember never tracked down so it doesn't only happen on a C6....

ABS/ESP & Handbrake warnings’ causes:
  • Brake pedal switch
  • ABS wheel sensor
  • Battery voltage

The power steering must be either the (belt-driven) pump or a hydraulic fault in the steering rack, surely...

Probably a dumb-a r s e d question, but they did check the accessory belt tension, didn’t they?

Leod,

Is your car with the garage at the moment?

Leod,

Did a bit of research and see that your power steering pump is an integral electric motor/pump unit with its own hydraulic reservoir and dip stick fitted to the cap. Therefore LDS and auxiliary belt is not relevant in your case. (On the larger diesels it's a belt driven pump sharing the suspension LDS fluid). It sounds very much like your power steering pump is operating intermittently. Whether this is down to the pump motor or the electrical circuit (e.g. bad plug connections) I'm not sure.
I'll look at the circuitry for this and advise further.

Best regards,

Phil C.

That's why I asked for the Vin Phil in a previous post so we can try and track down exactly where the issue could be.

Thanks Dave,

The set up on the 2.2 is very different!
