Hello
I know this is an often asked question and I genuinely thought I had the answer after lots of research on this forum and checking various oil specs but after reading the mechanics guide on this forum I am now very confused!!

I thought a low Saps C2 grade of oil in 0w30 was correct for my car - an 1999 2.7 diesel and I was looking at - TRIPLE QX Engine Oil (Fully Synthetic (Low Saps C2) Engine Oil - 5W-30 - 5ltr)

However I read in the mechanics guide that "(**) Do not use 5W30 oil on HDi engines with particle filter (FAP)."

I thought the C2 was important not the weight so much as my engine is not high mileage with 60,000 miles? I use heavier weight oil in some other cars with higher mileage.

Any advice or experience would be appreciated

Thanks
David

After further reading and investigating the spec of the QX oil it meets PSA 2290 spec so I am assuming the comments in the mechanics manual either relate to the 2.2 engine or is a mistake.

Unless someone can give me a really good reason why this oil is not correct I'm going to stick with it.

Thanks

Hello Saunderela,

I use the Citroen recommended Total Quartz Ineo which is synthetic 5W30 C2 - same spec. as yours and no problems.

Best regards,

Phil C.

There is a new standard that PSA says may be used in the place of the 5-30 C2 PSA 2290, that is the 0-30 C2 PSA 2312. A possible source of the confusion can be that the new oil is not recommended for the old C6, we should stick with the original C2 5-30. There is also the relative new C4 standard that can look temting on paper.

The mechanics guide dates back to 2005 IIR. When I bought my 6 not long ago from Wolsey House (Long standing Independent Citroen Specialists) I was advised by Dan to use C3 spec oil as it was far better for the engine.

Thanks for the replies. I have come to the conclusion that the oil i have bought meets spec and the guide is not the gospel.

Thanks

C3 oil in the C6 would invite some possible earlier problems with EGR particle filter and turbos along the way. C1 and C4 is on the better side there, but might lack additives that we need.... Some Oils have a combined C2+C3 rating (Mobil 1) and that should be OK.
