Having spent over £600 last week on replacing coolant bits the car now requires a new RGE valve (rear)
Warning message pops up occasionally so had the computer check done today.
Appears valve is not working, repair cost £856.
My questions are, what does this valve do, is it necessary, what is the worsed that could happen if I continue to use the car?
Oh, and the gearbox is juddering when cold....
I have had a year of relatively trouble free motoring, but, in the last few months the Duchess has really bitten me hard in the posterior.

I am sure you mean EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve. It lets a portion of exhaust gases into inlet manifold in order to reduce NOX. It costs around 120 euros (Valeo) and it is perfectly doable in couple of hours. Check the super sticky thread. If the valve is stuck in closed position the ECU shuts the other one also and you can drive the car as usual, only the check engine light remains. If it is open the engine runs very rough, in fact the juddering you have may just be caused by the faulty EGR valve.

You can also buy blanking plates and just blank them. It does not cause the check engine light to light up but you have to have working EGR valves.

To add to Vaho's post, if blanking the EGR circuit, one should really remove the butterfly in the throttle body: otherwise the engine will not see excess air across the whole performance map (because the ECU commands the throttle valve to partially close and force circulation around the EGR circuit).

Note that if one EGR valve has failed and the other has been sitting inactive for some time, it is likely that replacing the failed EGR will quickly cause the other (inactive) EGR valve to quickly fail.

Yes, the buttefly flap has to be removed, forgot about that.

Of course if the valve is already faulty the check engine light will remain on, even after blanking. You can erase the corresponding fault code after EGR-s are functional. Then only the gas flow is blocked, the EGR valves will work as usual. The fault code that follows after blanking "airflow higher than the setting" will not trigger the check engine light by itself.

So in your case you really have no choice but to replace the valve if you want a clear dashboard. But you really want to look for a better deal, either do the job yourself or buy the valve from internet and turn to somebody who knows what he is doing. You really want to go with OEM supplier Valeo for the valve and as said you can get it from Europe for some 120€ (autodoc.de).

One option is of course to blank the valves and delete the settings from ECU completely but that requires sending the ECU to specialist for reflash and deleting EGR related code.
