Gearbox shunt

 Gearbox often shunts in town, especially when driving really gently. My first thought was that the 70,000 mile old gearbox oil should be changed but apparently you can only get a small amount out, you have to change it about 4 times, diluting what's in there each time. (What a ridiculous situation, how much would 2 drain plugs have cost them on an engine that went into many different cars?)
So if the oil cannot be changed is anything else worth considering?

 There are many threads which have covered this topic of gearbox oil change.
You should try "search", here is one - I'm sure people are more willing to assist you when you use the existing forum resources.

 Hi Wantetc,

you have two approaches to a gearbox fluid change:-

A/ Find a specialist that can do a "balanced flush" (oil in and out via cooler connections on the box)

B/ Garage or DIY partial changes. It's possible to remove about 1/3rd each time. So 2 or 3 partial changes will essentially changeout the bulk of the fluid. Not hard to do but follow instructions to the letter on setting levels each time fluid is drained and refilled.

Note that the its not for lack of a few pennies: a large amount of the gearbox fluid is held in the torque convertor and its a feature of all torque convertors, that fluid cannot be drained out via a simple plug.

 There are posts elsewhere, but my experience...
Mine exhibited hard downchanges slowing down at junctions, etc. when hot (3rd>2nd I think). I tried the 3x fluid change with no luck and ended up getting a replacement new Citroen valve body from ebay which I got fitted by an excellent local autobox specialist who did in it 24hrs from underneath (they only had to move one pipe to get access). So problem cured (but wallet lighter!).
