As the subject line says....
I have a Lignage, so black door bin covers rather than the (admittedly very nice) fake wood.
There are a couple of relatively light scratches; I'm wondering whether to try to polish them out, or will that make things worse ?

(I'm reminded of the days when we used to rent movie DVDs from the library. One wouldn't play because of scratches. The collected wisdom of the Internet suggested polishing with toothpaste was the thing to do.
I ended up with a disk that looked worse than before I started and still wouldn't play, but smelled fresh and minty....)

yes in theory light scratches [superficial] can be polished out. I have in the past machine polished, on the lowest speed setting, the clear plastic screen for my motorbike. I took my time but end result was almost as good as new.

I don't know if a way without machine polishing though

Don't use an aggressive polish like tcut or anything. And use a microfibre cloth.

Yes it can be polished by a low abrasive polish. It has some lacquer on top
