Hi Phil, we were off on a tangent discussing your 2 stroke opposed piston Bedford diesel.

Here's a modern take on the same concept, Achates power Inc - Click Here -

Thanks G,

Interesting to see that they've gone for the twin crankshaft. The Tilling Stevens engine designers took the courageous step of designing an engine that output on one crankshaft and made it work. And it was supplied in Commer trucks from 1954 to 1974. Chrysler who took over the Rootes group apparently phased it out for commercial reasons. Amazing that the engine in my truck is 135bhp with a capacity of only 3523cc. Also fuel efficiency was a big plus - up to 20mpg unladen and 10 -15mpg laden.

Best regards,
Phil C.

Hi Phil, they already have a supply contract with the US army and another with Morse diesel to apply some of the R&D (presumably fuel injection side) to existing diesel two strokes. Plus there is quite a lot going on to develop small aviation diesel engines, both to increase specific power beyond what the traditional Lycoming type can deliver, to improve fuel efficiency and hence range for light aircraft, and because AVGAS is going to become extinct.

G
