HI Guy's,

I have a front drivers side wheel bearing gone, can anyone advise me of complications, how easy it is to change + specialist tools if required and where to buy it from at best price?
Also will I need to re-set anything via diagnostics?

Thanks

Cheers Doug

Seem's I've stumped you all on this one ;-0

I've learned that the bearing has an ABS magnetic ring on one side so I reckon it
will have to have diagnostic re-set done after changing?

Citroen have quoted £275 + vat for them to replace the bearing, guess they won't be getting
the job to do.

TMS my local car part supplier quotes £66 for part.

Let you know if I get anymore info.

GSF list it at 58.98. Europarts considerably more!

Doug,

I don't think you'll need diagnostics. If you change the ABS sensor no diagnostics are required. Once the sensor picks up your new bearing it should kick into life!

Hi Doug, I'm now replying to your posting re replacing the front wheel bearing.

I've only done the job on a C4 not a C6, but the bearing types are very similar.

The workshop doing the job will need some very good tooling as well as a 15tonne press. I would not entrust this job to a less than well equipped workshop. I guess the difference between the cost of the bearing and the Citroen price to do the complete job, reflects the cost of having all the correct tooling to hand.

Note, if I was getting the bearing replaced, I would probably replace the upper ball joint and lower FRIP joint whilst everything was apart.

Hi doug, why don't you just fit the entire hub carrier/swivel pin unit yourself, and new top ball joint?

Cost, about £200, but you will have a new bearing and frip complete as part of the unit, and the new top ball joint going with that, if you wish. You may require a superseding track rod end, not sure. Even if you let the job out, it's a simpler operation to perform.

Some people pay almost this for supply and fit of a new genuine Frip alone! You would be comprehensively renewed for that £200!

Hi all, I have a rumbling front wheel bearing (was advisory on last MOT) and looking at Eurocarcare, I can get the entire swivel/hub/bearing/FRIP as an assembly for £120 see here - Click Here - which seems better value than buying the bearing alone and trying to press that in.

Question is, can I replace the hub/swivel assembly and NOT replace the upper ball joint. I've seen some complications here (E3steve?) about thread pickup/galling for the upper balljoint.

Much appreciated

That was David's (Hallworth) that was so damned tight/cross-threaded that it almost stripped out the thread, Gordon.

Hello G,

Yes, it should not be a problem. Although, while you're in there a new upper balljoint is inexpensive!!? The special castellated socket is desirable rather than using a hammer and chisel!

The complete hub assembly also makes sense considering its price rather than the hassle of bearing change.

Good luck with the work,

Best regards,

G,
Just noticed a previous post of yours..

Also I like the term "duck's foot" on the Eurocare site!

Best regards,

If it is the N/S hub then carry out the top ball joint replacement, n/s runs in the pot holes and puddles that imo gives a shorter working life.

IMO a little heat on the alloy housing and liquid nitrogen on the ball joint use a rattle gun, remember to free the lock tags first.

Update on my upcoming front bearing job.

I've just completed a 460mile round trip which included some hilly sections and necessary overtaking past tractors etc, so acceleration and heavy braking required.

Bad news is brakes are now very poor with pedal vibration so maybe front bearing problem has caused the disks to develop flat spots?

Anyway, I've now ordered a replacement front swivel, ABS sensor and upper balljoint from Eurocarcare so thanks to all who reminded me I should do a proper job. I've also ordered replacement genuine TRW disks (part number DF4748S) and EBC Ultimax pads. So once fitted and the fluid changed and bled through, hopefully the front end will be working again. The only part I could not track down easily is the little ball joint protector but that is sheet metal and hopefully I can make that myself out of a little piece of stainless sheet.

Last thing, does anyone have the Sealey tool number for removal of the upper ball joint.

Thanks
G

Hello G,

The kit is SX0271. Well worth it. (Disregard the reference in their description to "lower ball" joint). Good point on a replacement ABS sensor! That held me up on a hub replacement!

Best regards,

Thanks Phil, that's the Sealey tool for the upper ball joint now ordered.
