My n/s headlight has suddenly failed. No warning, no pink light. I suspected bulb, and incidentally my local Nechells, Birmingham branch of - Click Here - has D2S bulbs for 31+VAT, and bought 2 bulbs. My indie Citroen dealer (Citroen Specialists, Pershore Road, Birmingham) then proceeded to swap out the bulbs - bumper off job.

However, new bulb in n/s unit still didn't produce working headlight. So, we swapped 'old' 'non-working n/s bulb with o/s unit...voilà it worked! So...means 'old' bulb is actually ok. Then we swapped ballast units, n/s to o/s ....voilà that worked too! Then checked power at multi-point connector with test screwdriver - seems to be power there. But no working n/s headlight (dipped or main beam).

Does anyone have any suggestions? And or wiring diagram of engine bay harness (seems to be the one diagram missing from Technical Documents section) please?

Reading other posts, It seems there is a mechanical 'eye-lid' operated by electro-magnet that converts from dipped beam to full beam. Is it possible this eye-lid is stuck in the fully closed position, that is to say the light is working but no light escaping the unit?

Would be grateful for any help. Currently driving with fogs and sides only to avoid the attentions of the boys in blue.

APG1959 the NS bulb can be changed (just) without taking the bumper of, but difficult.

It won't be the dip/main beam flap as you would be stuck on either main or dip beam the only way no light from headlight would be bulb/ballst/fuse/relay/wiring fault.

I don't know if they head lamps are on seperate fuses, what is unclear from the
voilà moment is if the N/S was working or the bulb worked in the O/F side as to test those items.

If at no time the bulb worked in the nearside then it is a fuse/relay/wiring fault.

I would sugest checking the fuse first to make sure thay are not separately fused.

Then relay, then wiring including bad earth and wiring fault within the headlight.

Its a shame they didn't try pluging the N/S headlamp in the O/S as the units were off that would have instantly indicated whether the fault was in the head lamp or the car?

Hope that helps.

Hi, thanks for reply.

. The first voilà moment was n/s bulb working in o/s unit, thus we know now the bulb is ok.
. They also swapped the n/s ballast to o/s and that worked too.
. Seems 1 fuse for both headlamps, seems not separately fused.
. Couldn't try n/s unit in o/s multi pin because number of pins different.
. Which relay do you mean as beng suspect?

Thanks for cleaning up ref the eyelid.

1.2 & 3 as I suspected.

4 thats a suprise, but at least thought to try.

5 there is bound to be a relay somewhere, but would need to be one per side for given fault, although unlikley as both on one fuse?

Do any of the small wattage bulbs light? ( that should rule out a bad earth ?)

Hi, the small lights worked, so I guess that rules out a bad earth. Therefore, I suppose....it's the relay.

Update 28/12/2012:

Culprit found, it's the ECU affixed to the underside of the headlamp unit. Therefore...does anyone have a second hand (but working!) headlamp ECU or second hand headlamp unit (side immaterial, it's just the ECU that I'm seeking).

Thanks in anticipation.

Do you mean the alloy box approx 5"x3"x1" I thought that was the balast resistor?
If so it can be opened up four torx screws and a gentle prise with a flat bladed screwdriver.
These people may be able to help? - Click Here -

Also try w w w dot xenonballasts.com as they claim they can source ballasts from all the usual lighting OEMs.

Plus this appears to be a UK based company.

Yes Dave but your post was not showing when I posted.

My bad.

Guess it took me eight minutes to read the other posts and reply attach pics/links and speel (sic) check?

Wonder if there is a Similar pug part at half the price?

BTW the one from my headlight was corroded and when split the PCB was all corroded inside too, so thats what gave me all the warnings when mine brokedown. That may be a point to watch if anyone has excessive misting up? I'll post some pics new year, was this the problem in this case APG1959?

Hi, the Citroen indie confirms it's this part (seems to be confusion as to whether it's the ballast or ECU module) however at 105 incl incl from xenonballasts.com, seems a good punt. Will update later in the week.

Hi, so the ECU that came was marked Audi but I was assured it would work. Bumper off, ECU fitted and hey presto! headlight restored. But...it was stuck on full beam (off side was dippable) and no steering control. Drat, back to the drawing boards but kept it in anyway. Lexia confirmed that main ECU could not read Audi headlamp ECU, but there must be a bypass circuit for some power to be routed through ti headlamp.

Paul (reseller) agreed to refund me once I sourced another ECU. I found these guys (oemxenonshop@gmail.com) and my new friend with enigmatic name of Sword found me one (inthink off a C5) and, after lengthy email ping-pong with confirming sticker details, I parted with another USD 175 and the Citroen branded ECU arrived a few days later. Transpires that Sword is in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, China - a place I know well as I visit there 4 times a year or so on business. S, I could return it personally if it failed...

My garage duly and expertly removed bumper again and voilà! full headlamp functionality wholly restored.

Paul duly refunded me (kept to his word) so all has ended well.

This pic is the ECU from the car, check that you have these words on your replacement ECU...
